So we look to have some good options at RB. Just not in the order I thought. Cooley and Haynes showed a lot of promise until everyone got bottled up in the 3rd.

Dontae was more than a mild disappointment and probably lost his starting job. If he didn’t, he deserves to especially if he keeps running like he’s playing flag football and pulling away from contact.

Did Donate get hurt? At one point, in the second half, he went to the locker room with a trainer/coach with him. Not sure. I'm not reading the entire game thread to see.

If he did, it wasn’t from contact.

My guess is Smith got the “senior special” start and isn’t likely to get another.

We appear to have several good backs; but no great back. Cooley had one great series and then played well but not remarkably after that. Haynes played well. I thought Smith did ok in 1st half; but I don't recall him getting touches in the second. If you are expecting Smith to blow through tacklers you aren't going to see that much, it has never been his running style. We need someone who can pound the ball between the tackles and I don't think we have that guy.

I believe the staff made a good call on the converted WR. That is promising. If we can get people in the right spots it might give us some edge to make up for likely always getting out recruited overall by certain programs. You got a guy buried here, might he help there?

Unfortunately we need some more guys of the 300 lb variety to move around like that.

No I don't. I remember people debating about Gibbs and Mason though.
People were debating running Gibbs up the middle vs Mason. It was no contest. Gibbs is not a between the tackles runner. Gibbs was off the charts in open space, plays designed to get him good match ups on the edge.

Dontae has been very good between the tackles, arguably as good if not better than Mason. Fri night was the worst game from him I've ever seen. The goal line play is ran right into Fusile and basically tackled himself. Don't remember seeing him after that.

Must be an Engineer thing, severely limited abilities to discuss anything in context.

Dontae is talented. I can’t understand how you guys freak out after one game. We had no offensive line play either so that didn’t help him. This is no different than the non stop FSU IS BACK texts I’m getting from my cousin right now.

He’s plenty talented. But I also don’t remember him avoiding contact like he did Friday.

Remember when people were calling for Dontae over Gibbs?
Yeah, that was always stupid. People are just finally catching onto the fact that Dontae often improvises and tries to bounce around for a big gain rather than hitting the designed hole and taking what's available. He did have 1 good run in the 2Q, but still tried spinning away from contact when he could've probably broken the arm tackle if he'd tried something less flashy. That's a nit though as it was his one good run of the day.

He probably remembered right before kickoff that he forgot to pay his disability annual premium. Smart if you ask me.
Well, knowing how amputation-happy you are, he wanted to be sure to keep a few other options open.

We haven't really had a 'great' runner between the tackles in a while. I would rate Mason better than Smith, and Smith better than Gibbs, running between the tackles; with significant separation between the 3. However, our OL hasn't been good at it since clown and Key took over.

Mike Sewak had some bad years too.

Mike Sewak had some bad years too. Our best offensive line coach was Mac McWhorter from all the way back to 2001. We should have hired him as the HC instead of Chan Gailey.

People used to ask if Sewak had pics of PJ with a goat, he was so bad. Guy was despised here.
