Football is one of our great American games. It is the duty and responsibility of each of us to see that it is kept in its proper perspective, and that it is protected. We should see that it is used to attain the objectives that mean so much to our way of life.

We feel that the spectator can be most influential and instrumental in helping to achieve these objectives, if he will develop the right attitudes. May we suggest a few?

First, and foremost among these attitudes that must be developed, is the realization that in football there must be a winner and a loser (excepting the occasional tie). The fan who recognizes this principle gets a great deal more enjoyment from the game than one who becomes irritated, aggravated, and rambunctious when "his" team loses. We would never minimize the importance of winning, but it is very unfair to the coach, the player, and the school when the fan forgets it is impossible to "repudiate the law of mathematics"--i.e., there must be a winner and a loser.

It is important that each of us develop the art of appreciating great plays made by the opposition. We should always give our opponents credit, rather than criticize our team when the opposition makes a great play. We believe perfection in the execution of a great play in football is to be admired and appreciated, just as we appreciate and admire the work of a great artist in any field.

The spectator should remember the football players are just human beings. They perform at times under great pressure, and they, as all other earthly inhabitants, are likely to make mistakes. It behooves all of us to remember, "To err is human, to forgive, divine."

Finally, we should always keep uppermost in mind that football, with all its glamour, glitter, thrills and chills, plus everything that makes it great, has one thing more important than all of these combined--that is, the boy who plays it.

By the way many of you post around here, Bobby Dodd would roll over in his grave. Stop being damn fools and recognize the effort these guys put forth!

Great sentiment.

At the time, Tech was in the middle of its most succesful period of football. The three years prior to that quote ('51 to '53), Tech had a record of 32-2-1. The three years after ('54 to '56), 27-5-1. Wish I'd been alive then to experience those years.

What you are implying is that the same sentiment cannot be applied today. That's bull****.

Wreckless:

With all due respect, I don't see the hostility on this board that I have whitnessed on some of the other boards. Take a look at some of the UGA, Clemson or South Carolina boards this year and you'll see a great deal of immaturity, typical fan 'trash talk' and downright hostility toward the opposing team and fan base. I think BarrelORum was simply trying to make a point, i.e., the winning team deserves praise for their accomplishment... the loosing team deserves fan support for their efforts. I happen to totally agree with him. Our family has had UGA season tickets the past couple of years (in support of our UGA daughter) and I've seen some disturbing trends as a result. The vast majority of UGA fans are great folks, but, a small minority take being a football fanatic a bit too far in their attitudes and actions. For example, if UGA were to loose a game this season, they would lock themselves in their RV and not come our for the rest of the weekend. The real point is that we all have the potential to carry this football thing too far. If Tech looses a game... so what? The world still keeps turning and the bills still have to be paid. If I were in the shoes of the Tech coaches or athletes, I could think of nothing that would be more demoralizing than to have the fans turn against me because the team lost a game (especially when I poured my heart and soul into the game the way Tech did at FSU). You simply have to give Tech credit where credit is due. We may have just run out of gas at the end but that cannot detract from the overall effort displayed. I can personally guarantee you that our UGA friends 'noticed' Tech after the FSU game based on the feedback that I received in support of our program. Even some of these diehard UGA folks now have respect and are pulling for Tech this season (except when UGA plays us).

I am very proud to go on record in support of the athletic teams of my school (win or loose). I'm also willing to congratulate and praise the opponent when we loose, without degrading or demoralizing our team in the process. I think this was the key point that BarrelORum was trying to make. This was one of the strongest lessons in life that 'Ma Tech' ever taught me. I sincerely hope that my younger daughter learns the same lessons during her student days at Tech.

Just 2 cents worth from an old Techie...

I think I'm on the wrong board. This place is downright hostile. I think I'll just stick to the weekly prediction contest.

I was just a rookie on another GT board when he came calling me names and treating me like I was the dumbest rock ever to tumble down the mountain...gosh I love that guy.

spellingbee, you mean you're not the dumbest rock ever to tumble down the mountain? Oh wait, that's me! You're right about BOR, he does everything 100% full speed. Don't worry wreckless, just stay calm and he'll move on to other targets.

Love ya, BOR.
