For some reason Tech never handles prosperity well. A great season that has many key players returning inevitably leads to disappointment - '73,'86,'91,'99, and '07 come to mind. We so quickly quit working as hard when we have a little success. One year ago we played a great game against Miami and really made them look awful. In 10 months things have changed a lot. My observations after tonight:
1. Go to work. CPJ needs to inspire this team, not berate it. They need a combination of hard work and motivation. Tonight was one very bad loss. A UNC win gets things back on track quickly.
2. After three games, it just does not seem this team had a very good off season. Few players seem improved. Some of the stars seem a step slower - Dwyer, Jones, Burnett. We can't change what did or did not happen last off season. But we need to learn from this in the off seasons to come.
3. We need to get over the CPJ as genius stuff. In his first 16 games at Tech there have been five stinkers - Gardner-Webb, UNC, UVA, LSU, and Miami. His offense can and will work if executed properly. But we will not enjoy sustained success because we have a smart coach with a brilliant system - it will be because he and his staff recruit great players and coach them up to be proficient blockers, tacklers, runners, catchers, passers, and kickers. They need to be hard workers. They need to play with a lot of spirit and passion. It is no secret or mystery - success comes with hard work. Honeymoon's over- it is time to roll up the sleeves for the long haul and pay the price for long term, sustained success.
4. We are very weak at kickoffs and coverage. We are getting beaten on both lines of scrimmage. We must make corrections and see improvement in these areas.
5. Winning is never easy anywhere, but especially at Georgia Tech it takes hard work and great effort. CPJ had his team ready after losses last year. Let's get back at it, and lose a little bit of our swagger that was more false bravado and get a little chip on our shoulders. We need to be ready to play with passion and intensity in nine days.
GO JACKETS! BEAT THE TARHOLES!
