We should all calm down, and here are some of the reasons why:
- We knew before last night that we had some problems with our QB situation and all our injuries. We also knew the defense was going to have to play a lot and would probably tire out. When you add the new injuries last night, I don't understand why everybody is so shocked. I also don't know what coach could overcome some of the problems Gailey is facing. Our problems are not the kind that can be solved in mid-season.
- We pay Dave Braine a lot of money, and his biggest job is hiring and monitoring the football coach, because football still drives the whole engine at Tech. Braine has a great record at hiring and monitoring coaches, and Frank Beamer and Paul Hewitt are two outstanding examples. We should have confidence in him. There is a steady hand at the helm, and he wants to win more than we do, because he's got a lot of money to raise right now.
- Chan Gailey has great credentials. If he were not a very good coach, he would not have been entrusted with the jobs he's had in the past. In the NFL, they do not suffer football fools lightly. He must feel shell shocked with all the injuries, and we need to support him. Remember, he is no less a human being than any of the rest of us, and his ability to get back up and try to put the best team possible on the field and then recruit can be influenced by all the criticism he gets. I doubt he reads the message boards, but I'm sure he notices the papers. Probably, the best thing all of us professing our love for Tech football could do to help the situation would be to send him an e-mail or letter of support.
- The players must get our support. They're all paying the price, and who could blame them for giving up if their own fans turn on them? Be there for the Virginia game and be vocal in your support. One Tech tradition is winning, but another Tech tradition is being classy. While winning is out of our control, being classy is not.
- Maryland is a very good team. Losing that game does not mean we can't win some big games this year. But if we want to help make that happen, we will have to be supportive.
- Yes, the coaching isn't perfect. But it never is. You just don't talk about coaching imperfections when you win.
- Everybody must ask themselves this question: Are we holding Chan Gailey to a higher standard in his job than we hold ourselves to in our own? Did we make some mistakes our first year on the job? It takes time to adjust and acclimate.
- For all you well meaning "fire him now" philosophers, let me ask you this. What coach in his right mind would come to Tech if we fired a man like Chan Gailey who has a winning record despite tons of injuries?
- There are times to celebrate victories, and there are times to be loyal to the school you love in the face of defeats. Sadly, there are some times when coaching changes must be made. But those times don't come until a person has been given a reasonable chance to do his job. That time is not even close to being here.
- As for the Hive, RR does a great job with it and he was probably wise to shut it down for a cooling off period. In fact, by doing so, he probably kept a lot of people from getting themselves kicked off of it for remarks they'd soon regret.
