I see this every year and it drives crazy. everyone always rants on and on about how rankings and "stars" dont mean a hill of beans bla bla bla, but the second we get one (4 star) we start flipping out - why dont we do that for our 2 star guys?? Why down play this ranking system thing until we end up reeling in one of the top rankers and then start ranting about how awesome he is?? I dont get it.

Happens everytime, its funny, its a double standard, we all know it, but its going to keep happening.

Bottom line, stars don't mean everything, but they're a good indicator of how confident certain services are about a kids abilities, lack of stars doesn't neccessarily mean he doesn't have those abilities, just means that they aren't as confident.

Its easier for big time schools (6A, in texas, 5A, 4A) kids to get a lot more exposure and often have more confidence. Same happens for kids near/in bigger cities. Enjoy the ride, we've got plenty of talent, coaching up that talent could use a bit of work, but we're doing alright all things considered.

The answer is somewhere in the middle. Most of us won't tell you that ranking "don't mean a hill of beans" but we will tell you that rankings "don't mean everything".

There are enough cases of guys like Calvin Johnson (dropped several spots in the Scout.com rankings the day after he committed to GT - from #3 to #8 or 10) that are proof that their goal is to sell subscriptions, not accurately rank the best college prospects.

Also, most football evaluations (by the recruiting "experts") are done on limited availability of tape and most (if not all) evaluations are based on production before the recruits SR year in high school.

Evaluating players is an inexact science for coaches (the real experts) so why do folks put so much faith in the opinion of guys with zero (or little) coaching experience?

That would be something to know. Who are the scouts? Do they have coaching experience? Physical training exp.? Some may know the ACTUAL game of football, but I don't know. Are there any big names that come to mind?

Jamie Newberg was a Florida fan & graduate that started the BorderWars site as a hobby. No coaching or playing experience.

MasterB (the Hive recuiting expert) was a poster with some connections to the GT program. If I'm not mistaken, he was a walkon WR for GT (not sure when) and I'm pretty sure (given his age) that he has no coaching experience.

Most internet recruiting experts probably have similar resumes to the 2 listed above.

That\'s how many of us already are...

I usually try to watch as many of the videos of the kids were recruiting as possible and make up my own mind.

For instance: I watched the tape of all of our QB recruits prior to them commiting. I thought that the kid from Buford, Justin Roper looked the most promising based in large part to his ability to make plays and find the open receiver. I liked Byron Ingram a close second because he looked to have the best touch on the ball and threw a pretty pass. Herb Bynes was next based on his scrambling ability and throwing. The one everyone was raving about back in September was Harry Betsy who I thought looked the worst out of the five and as it turns out might not go to a big time school.

When Dominique Reese committed to the Jackets, his physical stats don't overwhelm you, but my God look at his video. Holy Crap!! This kid is going to be good in my opinion and could even be an option at QB if we ran an option offense. In fact, I think he might be the most underated recruit we have. He isn't as fast as Earls, but he's got more shake and bake than most HS Div-1 athletes I've seen.
