Did anyone else catch the rundown in yesterday's AJC about Tech's recruiting budget? The total was $625,000. One thing that caught my attention were some relatively small items. $2,500 to Rivals.com, $2,500 to Max Emfinger National Blue Chip Recruiting Service, and $9,500 to Forbes Recruit Evaluation.

First of all, I thought I had heard that we didn't use these services for recruit evaluation. Secondly, what can they tell us about kids that our coaches can't determine?

I doubt any coaching staff uses the services for evaluations. I would expect teams use them to get names, especially from other regions. But I also think one of the big reasons they suscribe is to get the articles that talk about what kids thought of visits, etc. Since coaches can't make contact as often as they used to they probably get some intel from the services about what the kid is thinking.

The linked article gives you some idea of why staffs want to see what's out there on the recruiting sites.

This is probably old news, but I heard The "Kang" Oliver talking about this Lemming guy, ND, and a recruit.

Kang was making the innuendo that this recruiting guy could make a certain prospect sign with ND.
I have always thought these recruiting services were a fraud, but if you want to believe Oliver, there is a whole lot more to them!

If we would have paid them a little more, we could have had an all 5* class!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hugelaugh.gif

I love a good conspiracy theory as much as anyone, and it certainly wouldn't surprise me if payola is now laundered thru these "recruiting" guys.
It would make a much cleaner transaction than a payment to a blue chipper from Billy Bob in Jesup Ga.
Everyone knows it still goes on.

Something else that is less juicy, and makes as much if not more sense is schools paying these major recruiting gurus to bump the star value of their recruits.
Alumni and fans and networks just love a top 5 recruiting class.

That's all for now, someone is following me! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/eekhair.gif

I wonder how the budget figure of $625,000 compares with other ACC and SEC schools. I really belive we need a higher recruiting budget than most. As a very unique school - the finest school of technology in the land that competes Div IA - we need to have a national recruiting effort to land the kind of talented players who want what we have to offer. That takes $$$.

I agree that our recruiting budget needs to be set very high.
I say as high as Notre Dame's. In addition to recruiting, another line item needs to be added: Public relations and marketing. That budget amount needs to be larger than anyone's if we want to recruit on a national basis.

If we actually have a PR firm in place now, they should be fired because whatever $$ are being spent today is pretty much a waste.
