Recruiting History

The probllem with Pepper's teams was he didn't care about defense. Other than that, the '75 team was decimated by injuries. I think I remember that by the ugag game we had lost 11 starters over the course of the season. '76 we had trouble getting out of our own way. For some reason '77 is a blur, but the '78 team lost it's first two while we figured out that neither Gary Lanier or Gary Hardie was an I formation QB before we discovered Mike Kelly. We won 7 straight before ND and then ugag hurt ELI on a cheap shot to beat us by 1.

The records might not have been great, but it was a great time to be in Grant Field. FWIW, Duke wasn't an easy team most years in that span. I think we only beat them once out of those 4 years. Mike McGee, the USCeast AD was their coach back then and they were actually a decent team most of the time.

Just to satisfy the curiousity, we were 2-3 against Duke in that span.

Duke did field some solid teams back then.

One thing is certain, no one could take us lightly during the 70's. Most of the 80's ....different story!

I agree with all of this, but wanted to highlight this sentence. Grant Field in 1978 is my best sports memory.
Of course I was a freshman then, and had no idea what the next 3 years would be like. (Bee doesn't have the right smilie for this emotion in yet. If he did, it would be the big yellow head slapping himself on the forehead, as in "oh boy")

Back then you could sign a lot more kids. We signed 29 in 1975. They included 7 future NFL guys: Don Besseillieu (FL), Drew Hill, Kent Hill, Eddie Lee Ivery, Don Patterson, Al Richardson (FL), and Roy Simmons.

And Reggie Wilkes was in that first Pepper group I believe.

This doesn't go very far back, just a few years, but it does cover every team. I updated it a few months ago with this year's recruiting rankings and a 2006 pre-season ranking which only takes into consideration the team's most recent 5 year weighted recruiting rankings.
