Recruiting Needs…and maybe a few wants too

Recruiting has picked back up tremendously over the past week or so. Great, but we are still lacking in a few key positions. This thread is not intended to be a wish list of the best remaining prospects; instead, it is a wish list of prospects that we have a realistic shot with to fill the positional needs of the 2008 class. So here we go:

Tight End – The Yellow Jackets were looking to get two good Tight Ends out this class. Unfortunately, there hasn’t been a whole lot of movement along this front. Many of our prospective tight ends have committed to other teams. There are a couple of big name Pennsylvania kids still on the board, but our chances with them are slim, probably none. Undra Billingley was a name that some may have heard. He was considering decommitting from Alabama and had the Jackets on his short list…I wouldn’t hold my breath though. Ryan Wallace was another name that was mentioned earlier last month. However, Ryan did not live up to his stars and ranking when evaluated by the coaching staff at camp.

That leaves two prospects left and we need them both. Mike Triglia from The Bolles School in Jacksonville, Florida and Dont'a Hightower from Marshall County High School in Lewisberg, Tennesse.

Mike is a more traditional Tight End prospect that had more opportunity blocking than he did pass receiving at his high school. However, he was good at both. Although he was only thrown the football a small number of times, he exploded for 120 yards and two touchdowns on only eight catches. That is 15 yards per catch and he scored 25% of the time that he touched the football. Okay, maybe I am pushing it a little, but nevertheless, I like this kid and want him to be a Yellow Jacket.

Hightower is also an interesting prospect. He played and excelled at a multitude of positions in high school. You may want to sit down for this. Hightower's sophomore year he stepped in for an injured running back and rushed for over 1, 000 in four games of action. This past season he moved over to tight end and caught 18 passes for 253 yards and 4 TD's. On defense, where he lines up at outside linebacker and defensive end, he collected 98 tackles and forced a team high 7 fumbles. I think he also healed two blind kids and saved an old lady’s cat from a burning building, but I digress. Obviously, I want this kid in White and Gold…bad.

Defensive Tackle – The Jackets have apparently put all their eggs in three baskets. We need at least two of the three in my opinion. Omoregie Uzzi, Brandon Thompson, and T.J. Barnes are the three baskets that I would like to see painted “old” gold.

Uzzi is the prospect that I feel the most comfortable about. I think that he will ultimately be a Jacket, even though he is getting a big time push from UGA. His former teammate Roddy Jones is already a Jacket and his buddies Chris Jackson and Steven Sylvester have already committed to Tech this year. Tech has been loyal to Uzzi from the beginning and I think that it pays off in the end.

Brandon Thompson may just be the best overall player on the board for the Jackets. In a recent article, Brandon announced his top four as Clemson, Miami, Georgia Tech, and Florida State. I think that Tech is a legitimate #2 on this list. Clemson will be tough to beat for Brandon’s services. He almost committed to the Tigers a few months ago and has kept them at the top ever since. The Jackets have made tremendous headway with Brandon and from what I understand his parents are sold as well. It will be interesting to see how things pan out with him.

T.J. Barnes needs to add a little size if he wants to play big time college football…Okay, maybe not. The 6’7” 322 lb Barnes can fill up holes on any Defensive line and I hope that is it Tech’s. The Alabama native may be hard to pull away from his home state, but if anyone is in position to do so, it is Tech. He really seemed to enjoy his visits and had nothing but good things to say about the Jackets. We are a legitimate top three for his services and I wouldn’t be surprised if we were his secret #1. Two of the three, that’s what we need, but I want them all. It is okay to be a little greedy sometimes…right?

Offensive Line – This position really scares me. We could wind up with arguably the best Offensive Line class in the country or virtually no one. Not that commit Nick McRae is a nobody. Nick is a fabulous Center prospect I am extremely happy to have him on the Flats. However, we need bodies…preferably big ones. We have three prospects left on the board that we could realistically get. Kenneth Page, Preston Bailey, and Greg Shaw are the most likely candidates…and qualified candidates they are.

Page, the Guard prospect from South Carolina, is a hot target for more than 30 teams. However, he recently cut his list to 10. Tech made the first cut and I expect us to make the second to 5. If I had to predict his 5, I would go with Georgia Tech, North Carolina, South Carolina, Clemson, and Notre Dame. Landing Page will be a tall task, but worth it. He should be a tremendous college player.

Preston Bailey is another good O-Line prospect that is big enough to play Tackle and athletic enough to play Guard. Where we would play him most likely will depend on who else we sign. Preston seemed to enjoy his visit to tech, but I am not really sure where he stands. Once again, I think that we make his top 5 but will have some stiff competition for his services. Michigan, Tennessee, and Miami will most definitely be in the hunt. Being from Tennessee, Preston has always loved Volunteer football and it may be difficult to pry him away from the Vols.

Greg Shaw is a very good tackle prospect out of Miami, Florida. He is still a little raw, but his large frame and athletic ability bolsters tremendous upside. Shaw made clear earlier last month that he loved both the Jackets and the Bulldogs…Wait a minute…Is that possible? However, Greg’s older brother plays football for Louisville and many think that the Cards may be the team to beat. He informally mentioned a top 4 a couple of weeks ago where he named Tech, Georgia, Louisville, and Wisconsin as the front runners, but only listed Tech and Florida? as the two that he would definitely take an official to. Only time will tell us more about Mr. Shaw.

Defensive End – Defensive end is a position that we would like to land at least one good recruit. Unfortunately, this thread is supposed to mention players that we have an opportunity of landing. Therefore, I will not mention anyone because I don’t think that we actually have a real shot at anybody left on the board at this position. Good thing that we got two great ones last year.

here's my input to this thread... just to give a little more light to the subject. i'm not overly familiar with most of the prospects that you listed here. i don't follow navy recruiting since it's uninteresting for the most part. i DO follow irish recruiting, though... heavily. i am very familiar with all of their prospects... and one of them i Kenneth Page.

Page: he recently said in an article, when asked about who was making his next cut, he said, "Notre Dame and the two in-state schools most definitely." He's also reportedly very high on Tennessee as well. I don't think he will end up at ND, as ND doesnt need any more tackles... they only want guards right now.... depth chart is stacked with tackles.... well, that is, unless Page plans to grow into a guard.

I've heard Preston Bailey is very high on Bammer (or was it auburn?)... anyway, one of those two schools... Tennessee is said to be in a distant second.

I also think that it will be hard to pull Hightower from Tennessee...

anyway, those are my thoughts.

grow into a tackle? i was under the impression that tackles are bigger and guards are quicker-footed, no?

Just some of my thoughts . . . Regarding the offensive line, the 3 you mention are all good players and I too hope we can land at least one of them. Page would be at the top of my list. I do know that we tend to find one or two O linemen late each year. Usually the kind that we have to grow into the position. I feel like we will probably pursue a similar route this year regarding offensive linemen.

On the Defensive tackle front, I think we will certainly get one of the 3 and probably 2. If we get all 3, chances are we will move one of them to offensive line anyway.

I disagree about the defensive end position. I think we have an excellent chance with Chase Thomas who could easily be molded into a DE and I think William Green is still a possibility. In additon we have several large linebackers that could be molded into DE's; guys like Tongo, Barnes and Jefferson, so I am not overly concerned about the DE position.

Tight ends are a similar situation. I think Hightower would be great but he is a real long shot. The other guys are projects and we probably can grow our own here much like we can at the DE position.

Personally I hope we find a great kicker since we lose both Bell and Brooks after this season.

There are always a few suprises toward the end like Michael Peterson that crop up. It will be fun to see how things unfold.

Go Jackets!

Good post, Mustang. One thought I have on OL recruiting is that those three might be the only ones on our board right now, but there may be more that get added later. OL is the position, more than any other, where high school players progress the most towards their senior year. We could see some later bloomers added if we don't get 2 out of the 3 you listed.

TE - Triglia is not in the mix.
Not sure why you say that, sidewalk...he has an offer and we are still after him, as far as I know.

Two other DE that we're recruiting and have a shot at are William Green and Peter Massaro.

TE - Triglia is not in the mix.

DE - You should have mentioned Kaleb Ramsey.

Triglia - He had us in his top two along with Illinois not two weeks ago. Says that he wanted to take an official because he didn't get to see enough of the campus.

Has something changed since then?

Kaleb Ramsey - I didn't mention Ramsey because I don't think that we actually have a shot at him worth mentioning. He seems like a Pitt guy to me or at least a North guy. I have heard his name mentioned, but I think that it is just wishful thinking spurring from the fact that he is the only DE on the board that hasn't basically told us no.

Jerry the Jacket:

I did not mention Thomas simply because we are recruiting him as an OLB. But you are right, he could very well play DE…especially on the weak side.

GT Adamni:

William Green cut his list to three a week or two ago and we were not included.

Pete Massaro has mentioned openly that distance is an issue for him. Penn State is only three hours away from his home and he has said that PSU will be tough to beat.

In re: to DE, do not forget about the transfer from Tulsa, whom I would include with this year's class.
I think he can definitely help us. And he gets to spend this year redshirting when we have two SRs starting.

Sidewalk is on the money once again. Triglia does not look like a possibility...despite what he may be saying. We had actually hoped to bring in one TE this year...but we have to find one we like. The Alabama commit that actually wanted to talk to us again was Michael Williams...but I am not sure where that stands. Hightower is a possibility. Plus...there is an entire year of high school football to be played and there are many to be evaluated. Remember that Colin Peek has zero offers until his senior year when everyone jumped in late including GT, Alabama, and Florida!

Same story with the OL. We are among the finalists for blue chippers like Kenneth Page, Gregory Shaw, and Preston Bailey. We already have a kid we love in Nick McRae. Plus....there are many OL's that we talk to regularly that will be evaluated early in their senior year. Remember...there is a lot of growing to be done this year as many of these kids just turn 17 years of age. This is not a "skill" position. It is far too early to worry any about the OL.

DE- Nothing to worry about here. We missed on a couple...but there are a couple more...plus a lot for 2009. We already have one "commit" in Egbuniwe who transferred in from Tulsa. Additionally, do not be surprised to see a LB or two end up playing with their hand down...particularly Tongo. We have some depth there. Additionally, we look good for Chase Thomas who could end up at DE if he keeps growing like he wishes to.

DT- This is a bit more dicey as we need two of three to come through between Uzzi, Barnes, and Thompson. The recruiting job on Thompson has been amazing...as he was considered a lock to Clemson by coaches across the country. He is the best pure DT in the southeast perhaps. We look good for Uzzi who could also end up on the OL. We are fighting the Alabama state schools for Barnes (also could be a dominant OT)...we are doing much better here than the beat writers in Alabama think. Although, he is admittedly a tough get.

LB- I am pretty sure Munroe and Stuckey are both out. Chase Thomas and Etienne Sabino have open ended offers and can come in whenever they want. We are top five for Sabino.

DB- Coaches are really hoping Carlton Lewis commits to us over South Carolina and others and finishes our class of DB's. There is a possibility of a sixth entering the mix if it is can't miss athlete that could be a smothering cover corner...but if not it is not a big deal...coaches are thrilled with Lockhart and Reid....Tenuta like them a lot.

We are done at WR, RB, and QB. There is always a possibility of an "athlete" recruit popping up that could play on either side if he is that good.

Nicely done Hivered!! I'd like to add one more LB.

I hear we're still in it with J. B. Fitzgerald.

As we continue on the recruiting front, there is a lot of HS and College football to be played while this recruiting shakes out.

There are still official visits yet to be made!

Go Jackets!!

I beg to differ.

OL may not be a skill position but we can't just assume that everything will be ok by waiting and then getting some guys with "great potential"You need a couple of established studs and then fill in around them at least.

I agree the OL is not a skill position, not by any stretch of the imagination.

It is THE skill position by which nothing good would happen on offense without.

Spoken by a "once a Tackle, always a Tackle" guy, but I did get to play Center some and Linebacker.

The best thing a hotshot QB or RB can do is be thankful for his OL.

With a good enough OL, you don't need a 4 or 5 star QB or RB. Just give the ball to ol' Granny and watch'er haul that tater to the bank.

Thanks to the OL of course.
