I would like to start my campaign here at StingTalk with a little bit of recruiting news and analysis. As I am sure that most of you are aware, Gailey and company are hot on the trail of some of the nation’s highest touted prospects. Recently we have added another new recruit to our list; Nick Moody, a 6'1 205 lb Safety from Roman Catholic High School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
ESPN Evaluation: Moody is currently an aggressive, hard-hitting safety in high school. When looking at his potential size, aggressiveness and lack of ideal deep coverage range, we project he will move down to outside linebacker in college. He possesses a tall frame with good muscular tone. We feel he has the broad shoulders to pack on and effectively carry more bulk. He shows good, short-area closing speed and quickness. Best attacking vertically and flashes a quick first step once he deciphers run or pass. Nick displays textbook form tackling at times. Consistently, plays with low pad level and a good base at the point-of-attack. He is an effective blitzer who can close quickly off the edge, which should help his ability to control the perimeter as a linebacker. Coverage range is good and flashes the ability to blanket underneath routes. However, in coverage and in space, he has the tendency to play high and a bit stiff. He lacks the fluidity in the hips to change direction quickly. He also needs improvement finding and hitting sharp pursuit angles when sifting through the wash laterally. We question his ability to close as fast laterally as he does vertically. At times, it appears his ability to read and react on the run is limited, especially in traffic. If he is going to play in the box on a permanent level, he must improve his reaction quickness and ability to shed blockers as well. Moody flashes signs of being a very good athlete for his size. We feel he can be successful in an attack style defense with limited reading, either at outside linebacker or strong safety.
My Analysis: Moody is definitely someone that we will be interested in, especially with the departure of Linebackers Gary Guyton and Philip Wheeler. Unfortunately, Nick seems pretty wooed by the Florida powers, State and UF. Recently, he has also received an offer from Penn State. With Moody being projected to play outside linebacker in college, I am sure that playing at home and for “Linebacker U.” will be appealing to him. However, nobody thought that Derrick Morgan, who is also from Pennsylvania and heavily courted by Penn State, would be wearing White and Gold by spring practice.
I would like to take on a new recruit every couple of days if possible. There is a little bit of backlog to catch up on and I will update the board anytime a catch wind of a new committable prospect. Enjoy!
