The following evaluation was taken from ESPN Insider and has been paraphrased for the protection of myself and StingTalk.com
Keith Wells, a 6’ 5” 215 lb. Defensive End from Gainesville High School in Gainesville, Georgia seems really high on the Jackets and the Jackets coaching staff seem really high on him.
Evaluation: Wells needs to add some bulk, but he has a very nice frame to grow into. He gets good explosion out of his stance, fires out low, and does a good job of standing up his blockers. While at times he will just dominant his opponent, there are times where he will just stand up or get straight legged and allow him himself to be pushed off the ball. He is great at using his hands to create some separation and make a play. However, he can struggle at times to cleanly shed blockers. He is adequate at reacting and filling space, but at times needs to react a little quicker. Though he sometime hesitates to pursue from the backside, he does a good job once he commits. He has descent speed, he is a solid tackler, and comes across as a pretty tough kid. He is at his best when playing the run, especially when it is coming right at him. However, he lacks as a pass rusher. He will really need some work in this area. Wells is a prospect that is very coachable and appears to have a big upside. Overall, he is a good player, but he needs to commit to his responsibilities a little quicker.
My Analysis: Mr. Wells seems like an outstanding young man. Though this kid is not as highly touted nationally as some of the bigger Defensive Ends in this class, Tech’s staff seems to feel that he has an enormous upside and I agree totally. After a red-shirt and some college weight training, this kid should shine. He should at worst develop into a solid run defender. Tech was the first to start recruiting Keith and Tech seems like the clear leader with the Tar Heels a close second.
