The class that signed after the championship season had us pretty optimistic - mainly because we landed QB Donnie Davis from Burlington, NC. He redshirted in 1991, Ross’s last season, as we still had Shawn Jones at QB. The next recruiting class fell apart - Ross had flown to the NFL and no one signed before February back then.

In short, we really felt no increase in recruiting success after winning the ‘90 title. But, our coach only stayed one more year. Had Ross been happy at Tech and stayed, I think the title and his stature as a coach would have led to better recruiting.

Had Ross been happy at Tech and stayed...
I don't remember it that way. He wasn't happy at Maryland. We threw him a lifeline. He may have been frustrated with The Hill, but that didn't drive him away. Getting offered a HC job in the NFL straight from a GT MNC was a no brainer for him.

Our next coach almost destroyed the program. He refused to play Donnie Davis.

Our current coach is challenging that coach for the title of worst head coach ever at Tech.

Yep, as I remember it he was set to become an assistant for the Bills and Homer swooped in at the very last minute to bring him the Tech. He had always wanted to try to get a pro job and the work he did at Tech enabled him to have that opportunity. The biggest mistake was not hiring Fridge or O'Leary to maintain some consistency (They went with Ross to SD). The momentum when down the toilet and with **** ***** and he drove in the death knell by fracturing the locker room with the way he handled Donnie Davis who was the number 1 ranted QB out of HS.

Not exactly. He had already resigned from Maryland and was on his way to Buffalo, NY to take the NFL HC job. Homer Rice called him and talked him out of it and into taking the GT job.

Ross had an uphill climb at Tech the entire time he was here and just got tired of it and left.

We did bring in some good recruits after that - especially when O'Leary took over. But there was a bit of an incident (I forget what) and The Hill put the clamps on unqualified/underqualified athletes which reduced the pool we had to choose from. We would still get good guys but much fewer of them. O'Leary, Gailey and Johnson (the early years) were good recruiters. Johnson's last few years were disasters and Collins hasn't proven to be as good as advertised (it seems to me). Ironically, Collins was credited with pulling in one of the best recruiting classes in recent memory as an assistant (I forget the year).

Donnie Davis was regarded by many as the best QB in the class.

Davis was one of the best three high school QB’s I have seen play in person. He should have played ahead of Luginbill. However, during his early career he had a shoulder injury. Believe me, his arm in college was never what it had been before the injury.
