Could Tech's early success with recruiting instate force Georgia to refocus its recruiting back to here also? Not that anyone here has the answer.....I hope not though.....I like what we are doing and if Mark Richt wants to continue stretching out his recruiting base in all directions I say more power to them.

SLJ, I like what we are doing also. According to the AJC this morning, we picked up another in state LB recruit from Wrightsville, and his father stated that he was blown away during his first visit to Tech, or something to that extent. I think UGA gas a natural recruiting advantage in GA with most of the kids, so I don't think they need to refocus here. But I do think we can always attract the kids who are serious about their education when we layout our best efforts, as we are doing now. I think this transfer from Auburn will help us get our message out also. Let's keep it going!

This coaching staff is made up of super recruiting enthusiasts that hustle. Giff Smith and Brian Jean-Marie are big-time hustlers for instance, and Geoff Smith has brought in energy from his role that has not been there before. Kelly, Hunter, Modkins, D, are also doing a great job. To top it off, I understand Gailey has the sales pitch down and is doing an incredible job when talking to the kids, coaches, and parents.

This is just the first year, it will build from here as they work the soph's and jr's.

Bogey: Its kinda like Georgia is leaving the door open to the chicken house......and this time Tech is the fox! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

SLJ, I love it!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrinbounce.gif

Hivered: I understand what you're saying. It would be great to start going head to head on these instate prospects and start winning more than our fair share of them. Hopefully these early successes will snowball into sustained excellence on the recruiting trail.

[/ QUOTE ]UGAg is going to "get theirs" instate (there's still to many dumbarses that we can't get past the hill + the others that are dawg fans all the way) - there's nothing we can do about it. However, if we close the doors on teams like Clemson, F$U, Auburn, UF, UT, South Carolina - then we'll be well positioned at least in the recruiting game.

Contact: Maybe so, but I am sure that Georgia has been taking for granted that brains or not, any kid wanting to stay instate had the Dawgs pegged #1. And don't kid yourself that Georgia doesn't prefer smart kids.

SL,
you are correct. UGA would prefer the brains naturally but they will go after anyone they believe will help their program, brain or no. I am thinking right now of one execptional athlete from Rome that they yanked up just to find out he didn't receive a HS Diploma yet. That probably happens more than I would ever know about, but I did know about that one. Didn't matter too much to the player because he just jumped around to an easier college, played a year or two, then went pro and made it fine.
Also, as long as UGA beats us on the field, I believe they are going to get the more wanted pickings anyway.
Also, the fact that UGA has had their administrative act together lately better than we doesn't hurt them in recruiting.
Now, saying all that I want to also say that I am very proud of the job GT is doing presently of getting these early commits. We have been a little draggy on this lately but it appears that is changing.
I'm still optimistic that we are about to see this program begin to shine like in days of old. I truly believe that GT is on the threshold of football greatness and we are fortunate in that we will be the ones to see it come about very soon.

[/ QUOTE ]Georgia hasn't taken anything for granted in state - they're still competing against F$U, Clemson, Auburn & Florida - we just need to be the #1 team they're competing against.

I realize their are many Georgia high school athletes that are working in the classroom and can succeed at GT - however, it doesn't take too much research to find all the of highly rated Georgia football players (Leonard Pope, for ex.) that are routed through Hargrave Military Academy or a similar school.

I'm not using it as an excuse - it's a fact that we can't bring in all of the guys that UGAg (or other regional competitors) can. But we certainly can bring in enough of the ones who are serious about both school and football.

I think you are comparing apples and oranges. Even in the recruiting hay days when The Hill had their eyes closed, we typically ended up with kids that chose us over Purdue, Notre Dame, Auburn, Clemson, Boston College, Ohio State, etc....not Georgia.

Brad Jefferson is another perfect example. He had offers from us, Duke, Florida, Clemson, Auburn...and supposedly Georgia the day before his commitment. However...his final two schools he chose between were GT and Duke.

Hivered and Contact: Obviously you two want to rain on my optimism about our recruiting or you just want to be argumentative. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif

I completely agree we have to get stronger with in-state recruiting as part of an overall plan and I am glad to see that happening.

It is just our kids, generally speaking, usually have a different value system, right or wrong.

Another example is Jon Muyres. Georgia kept thinking it was a UGA/GT battle...and he looked at them. However, his second choice if I recall was Penn State.

I think all of us are in agreement here that recruiting is moving in the right direction.

DT David Brown had one, I bet that Richard had one, but I don't have any evidence of that.

David Brown did have one. Richard's offers were from Colorado, LSU, Miami and Notre Dame. BaBa had the only Georgia offer for the 2006 class.

Believe it or not, Darryl Smith did not have a UGA offer because they thought they were ok at that position.

That's not my recollection. If I remember, They wanted Darryl Smith badly and I seem to recall the Georgia Boards going Ape Shit over the fact they lost him to us. I thought that Darryl Smith and Marcus McNeil went to the same high school two years apart. If I remember correctly, there were a handful of high profile recruits that came from Albany at that time over the course of 2-3 years and so everyone was offering those kids so that they would have their foot in the door.

I remember Smith being one of the big ones we stole from UGA. I could be wrong, but I really don't think I am. I remember that years class was the year we kicked UGA's ass for the first and only time in the recruiting wars.

Actually, my memory is that they were not going to take any LB's that year. So, Darryl did not get an offer. Now, they may have come in late and tried after they lost someone on their roster, but it was too late. I remember that because they came hard after Keyaron Fox and he actually made a late trip to Athens but stuck with Georgia Tech.
