After 4 recruiting classes, Chan Gailey's recruiting class rankings mirror our results pretty closely. We seem to finish with classes ranked from 35-55 under Gailey.
We end up 7-5 every year. With 117 Div I-A schools, we're in the middle of the recruiting pack. We end up with a middle of the pack record. We end up in the lowest bowls available.
This year our recruiting class is ranked 50-55.
IIRC, there are 28 bowls. 56 teams get invited. The Silicon Valley, MPC, and Emerald Bowls are reserved for teams that finish in the bottom tier of bowl eligible teams. Teams 45-56.
That's right where we recruit.
Whereas, Southern Cal, Texas and LSU recruit near the top. They finish near the top. Whereas, Ugag recruits in the Top 10 and finishes in the top 10.
Whereas, until we get a coach that can recruit blue chippers in reasonable numbers, we are never going to get out of this 7-5 year in and year out mode.
Some of our fans say that Gailey overachieves with our talent. I would propose that Chan gets exactly what you would expect from 55th percentile talent. 55th percentile results.
Please, don't fall into the trap of blaming this class on the NCAA. We have recruited like this every year under Chan The Man.
