It is almost Christmas and we only have about 12 commits. I hope PJ gets few more here soon. Any news?

Purely a guess but it seems like this is a year where we will get 18 or so recruits.

Like the limited #'s that CG had to deal with for a couple of years...

dont you know that to become an elite team you have to wait until the last week and then land about eight 5* blue-chippers?

we are in a different LEAGUE now, no more mediocre, all TOP NOTCH!

Once again our powers to be have found a way to keep us on probation for another year. We should be signing 25 plus 2 plus adding a couple from the walk on group.

Instead, my guess is similar to you that we'll be lucky to sign 20 real Div 1 recruits. This keeps us on probation, something that will take three more years to get over.

Before it's all said and done, we will have been on probation, the equivalent of probation (flunkgate), or the after effects of probation for almost 10 years. Chan did a hell of a job considering this issue. I am a fan of Paul's but it won't surprise me at all if it all comes tumbling down.

The simplest way to avoid this is to have a great class this year. Here's hoping.

(p.s. There is an immense availability of playing time at the flats for freshman of 2008).

I count 14...one of which will enroll in January with Tyler Melton. Glad to see that he has stayed committed throughout this entire rehab process. He could have gone elsewhere. You could say Pridemore is a soft verbal since he is visiting Florida on January 11.

Lets not panic yet...although losing CJ was a big blow athletically and mentally. The coaches are re-evaluating during this dead period where we stand with current kids we have been recruiting...and then they are going to go after new ones in January that have re-opened their commitment, ones that are interested in the new changes, and more athletes. For instance, the RB was closed but now we need more and will go after more. The QB position was closed, but now we will add one or two more in addition to Shaw. We were close to landing some TE commitments but we are no longer recruiting TE's. Of course, some TE recruits can also play on the defensive side...so lets wait and see.

January will bring some new names. Then..everyone can start posting about rumors again...give their own personal rankings to players...cite numerous personal sources...etc. etc. :D

Tyler Melton WR 6-0, 182, 4.5 TX
Embry Peeples TB 5-8, 175, 4.3 FL
Nick McRae C 6-3, 285, 5.1 GA
Kamaron Riley DB 6-3, 190, 4.5 GA
B.J. Machen LB 6-0, 221, 4.65 OH
Steven Sylvester LB 6-2, 215, 4.7 GA
Richard Watson RB 6-0, 230, 4.55 FL
Cooper Taylor FS 6-4, 180, 4.48 GA
Jon Lockhart CB 6-0, 185, 4.53 FL
Rashaad Reid CB 5-10, 180, 4.5 FL
T.J. Pridemore LB 6-2, 230, 4.58 GA
Malcolm Munroe LB 6-3, 205, 4.5 FL
Brandon Leslie DB 6-0, 195, 4.6 CA
Jaybo Shaw QB 6-0, 170, 4.6 GA

PLEASE TELL ME WE WILL FILL UP? I'm tired of self-imposed probation. I find it hard to believe we can't find players to fill out the class

We "NEED":
QB (1)
RB (1)
OL (3)
WR (1)
DT (2)

"GRAVY"
DL (1)
RB/WR (2)
OL (1)

I feel we might still lose a player or 2 on offense in the transition. This is most likely to be a WR so we should stock up on fast guys. Hopefully those guys can return kicks/punts also.

Well...we did this to ourselves...we knew recruiting numbers get limited when you change coaches this late in the year. It is particularly difficult these days with kids committing early in unprecedented numbers. You do not want to take a kid just to fill up the 25 (we could have taken 27 and let two start early). You want kids that can compete at the BCS conference level.

That being said...in response to your request:

1) QB's- We will take 2 or 3 including Shaw.
2) RB's- We will take 3-4 including Watson and Peeples
3) TE's- no TE's will be recruited
4) DB's- We want to find a stud cover CB to go with Lockhart, Riley, Reid, Leslie, and Taylor. We lost our shot at Bell with the change as he committed to Auburn. He was supposed to visit 12/7. I would expect another "athlete" to come in as a DB to bring the total to 6.
5) LB's- Lets hope we are done here with 4 in Sylvester, Munroe, Machen, and Pridemore. If we lose Pridemore we probably will not go after another LB unless we get in a "best athlete available situation".
6) DE's- We took in Egbuniwe as a transfer and put him on scholly. He will be a So-R next season so we have him for 3 years. We would like 1 at this point. We could take an additional depending on if we can convince some of the TE's we were recruiting to come in on the defensive side of the ball..like the Alabama kids.
7) DT's- We would all love to get 2...but that is highly unlikely unless Barnes and Thompson commit. ..and Barnes is probably a better OT long term. Uzzi is really an OG...so if we get him I would count him there. I would not be surprised to see new names pop up on the radar at this spot.
8) OL's- We would like 3 and already have McRae. Uzzi is a good shot but is getting Alabama pressure and will visit there on our big recruiting weekend of Jan. 11...that is disappointing. Shaw is visiting 2/2 if we can hold him from committing somewhere else prior to then. We are trying to solidfy Barnum for a 1/11 visit. There are several we were not going to offer like Wokomaty...but we may take a second look at some of these and their size will not be as much of a factor. They have to be quick and mean (low blocking schemes).
9) WR's- We have Melton. We would love to get another WR that is a burner that can run and catch. AJ Jenkins would have been perfect...as would have Chris Jackson. This is not a huge priority but the coaches would like to find another given the right athlete.
10) ST's- no punters or kickers. We have Scott Blair for 3 years and think he will work out. Yahiaoui has spent all year working on punting exclusively and we hope he is the man for the next two years. We will pursue several lot of walk-on's in this area.

We need quarterbacks, because they're going to get beat up running his offense. We need lineman on both sides of the ball. That would be my focus.

That is somewhat true but also somewhat of a myth...particularly since the QB's are typically quick enough to not get a lot of hard direct hits (i.e. Joe Hamilton) and they usually see the hit coming.

A kid who drops back straight 25-30 times per game is going to get mauled on his blind side multiple times from DE's with their ears pinned back....before or after he releases the ball. Those hits are punishing because you are not typically prepared.

We need more QBs because that means we have a better chance at getting one that doesn't suck.

God willing, in 2008 both our quarterbacks, and our coaches, and our officials, and the clock keepers of the stadiums we play in, will all be able to count to four.

Just a question hivered. If this is changing coaches late in the year, when would you think it should be done? Seems to me we made the move as early as we could and replaced him pretty quickly. Any change impacts recruiting, but I really don't see how we could have done anything different from a timing issue except maybe gotten the Johnson hire done a few days earlier.

I don't disagree at all. If you are going to fire a coach, we did it at the best time for the overall program...and replaced him as quick as possible while also conducting a decent search.

I certainly did not mean to imply it could have been handled differently. I was just noting that the change impacts recruiting more these days as a higher percentage of kids are locked up....unless you go poaching recruits from other schools that changed coaches!

It would have been a crazy coach search if we fired Gailey early. Nobody would have come until the end of the year and we would have died with rumors here on the board!
