Reggie\'s Performance Against Auburn....

Remember how happy we were with Reggie's performance against Aub? He played within himself, did not force anything, protected the ball, and made the plays that were there. I remember thinking he had ARRIVED!!! What happened as the season went on? If I remember correctly, he did OK in the UNC game, not as good as Aub but made the plays to give us the victory. The big turning point seems to be when he got sick, after that we were lucky to score 20+ points. Do y'all think the illness had any lingering effect? I really don't think so myself because I look at that first drive against UGA, a thing of beauty. For the life of me I can't figure out why we could not do that 2 or 3 more times during that game. It's really baffliing.

Re: Reggie\'s Performance Against Auburn....

I think his problem is that he cannot read the safeties...and hence we work 99% of the patterns to the sideline where he can be safe. The Auburn game was no different with the exception of better accuracy from Reggie and 4 INT's we got on Cox.

His performance in that game was pretty typical of the season. His throws were not very accurate, he completed less than 50%, he threw as many INTs as TDs, and he had less than 5 yards per attempt. Those types of numbers would get you benched most places.

I also don't think CG wants RB to throw over the middle due to his numerous inteceptions and his perchant to have passes knocked down by opposing lineman. CG has recruited a tall qb in this year's class. I guess he thinks the shorter qb's can't see over the lines...

I don't know about lingering effects from illness, but I do know I was very pleased with the offense the first three games - 23 against Auburn, 27 against UNC, 28 against UConn with Reggie ill.

Then came the Va Tech debacle and we were never the same. Ten straight terrible quarters against the Hokies, Wolfpack, and first half at Duke. We only scored 20 or more points in 2 of the last 9 games - against Duke and Wake.

Injuries to PJ, Reggie's illness, declining confidence, a line that never developed much depth or consistency - whatever the reason - the offense was fine to start the year but really deteriorated as the season went on.

Whatever happened, the coaches need to figure this out and correct things in the spring and summer and be better prepared to make adjustments in the season next fall. We must play more people on offense and improve our depth.

I agree with you on most things but not on this point.

NOT throwing over the middle is an NFL prejudice that Chan Gailey has. This is one more reason that he needs an OC with college passing game experience.

I agree that Reggie's field vision is not great (Ralph had teaching tools to improve the QB's field vision; I've been told they are still at GT and that Chan has never used them). So, if what you say is true, consider the following:

1. Not all college teams are equal, and you have to figure out the weakness of this week's opponent and exploit it (something else that Chan has not grasped; the weakness difference in the NFL is slight, so you play to your strengths, moreso than their weakness). Have Reggie throw over the middle against teams that don't have great safeties. Reggie gets experience, and you have created film that another opponent has to worry about.

2. Throw the ball over the middle on a safe throw even against an opponent with good safeties. Make sure that Reggie accounts for the safeties, even if the pass is incomplete. Now the safeties have to worry about defending that zone. Not every play works, and good OC's know that it's OK--some plays are designed to keep the D honest. An incompletion over the middle may lead to a later completion on an out pattern.

3. We don't even send receivers over the middle as decoys. Why not? Again, Chan has the NFL mentality that you don't throw over the middle. This, and the fact that Reggie had completions against a good Auburn team over the middle tell me that this has more to do with Chan Gailey than with Reggie's inabilities. You may be right, but I don't see the evidence of it.

You'll have to clue me in on this NFL prejudice about throwing over the middle because I've never seen it.
