We start to have a few close losses and quite a few people who did not like O'Leary to begin with, but kept quiet as long as we were winning, started to come out of the woodwork.
I and quite a few other Hivers were appalled at all that. I posted a few times if we were to go through a coaching change this is what could happen:
1. All the hard work that O'Leary and his staff did in building good contacts with the high school coaches would be gone. Poof. Unlike UGAg, which has a built-in advantage with contacts at high schools since most of their teachers went to UGAg, we don't have many engineers teaching business math or PE. Now, we have a new staff that has to start all over. Recruiting is a major concern.
2. Transitions are tough on just about any teams. Yes, there are a few that go smoothly without losses or conflicts like Maryland or Miami of last year. New coach usually always mean a year or two of transitions where the team and coach feel each other out.
There are plenty of other examples I can't think of at 6:40 in the morning after the worst loss in five years, but to those who were happy O'Leary left: Be careful on what you wish for.
I'm still not ready to throw in the towel on Gailey and his staff. Its obvious that there are some serious problems on the field. But before we all start bashing Gailey, let me make a point: We still could be in the exact same boat if O'Leary were still on the sidelines with all the injuries this team has suffered this year. I daresay that we have suffered the equivelant of three years of injuries in the FIRST TWO MONTHS!! Unfreaking believable!!
Hopefully this tough season won't unravel like B*** L**** final season.
But I wanted to get this post out to people who last year that were happy to see O'Leary go. Maybe O'Leary did take the team as far as he could, maybe not. I do know this: Just about everything I said that could happen if we were to go through a coaching change, has happened.
We need to, however, stick behind our coach and our players. They need us more than ever!
GO JACKETS!!
