Regarding Mike Slive's pitch for a "four plus one" college FB playoff format:

"His proposal for a plus-one model was a small step – essentially a four-team playoff contained within the current bowl structure. It wasn’t as much as most fans, players and coaches want, but it was a fine compromise to take to the BCS meetings for 10 of his fellow commissioners and the athletic director of Notre Dame to consider for further discussion."

Ridiculous Part 1 - Not approving a playoff.

Ridiculous Part 2 - Notre Dame has the same say as a whole conference

Notre Dame can kiss my a$$. I hate those lucky bastards almost as much as i hate UGA!!!

It amazes me that more football factory schools (maybe Alabama, Oklahoma, USC) don't go independent and reap in the dough. The NBC contract is in the 10 mil a year range. I bet ABC, FOX and CBS would love exclusive contracts with some big name school. And they might actaully win a few games too. Notre Dame does its other sports in the Big East, so it gets some conference sharing from that too. Bastards.

it didnt work out so well for Tech when we tried it. i think being in a conference is the way to go. if ND continues to perform poorly then that TV contract may just disappear over time.

or -- just deport all the Catholics back to the old country and then there would be no 'inherent' fan base

Not just being a big school--like an Alabama or a USC--but being a big Catholic school is the key for ND success on TV and football--all Catholics can and often do support ND, even while supporting other schools as well. Alabama and other state schools would not get the national TV demand that ND gets.

I'm Catholic, and I hate Notre Dame with a passion. I'd imagine, as most catholics secretly loathe themselves, that more would follow suit.

It's ridiculous that 100+ schools should have to bow to the whims of one overblown and overrated school. Here's to another magnificent 4-8 season. **** the Irish.

Catholics don't automatically follow BC, then why ND? I'm a Catholic and I don't follow them.

I think ND's time is limited. There was a time when it was USA v USSR and the Olympics were great. Today they are watched by some folks.

Likewise, there was a time when the big dominant Catholic school had multitudes of fans in the immigrant populations of Chicago, Boston and New York. Today, I just don't see the next generation as being that enamored with ND. Their days are numbered as a power IMO.

There days as a power are about over. But their fanbase still seems loyal for the time being.

It is ridiculous though.

Their "fanbase" is a bunch of bandwagon f'ks that like ND simply based on history. A third probably couldn't tell you that it's in South Bend; half probably couldn't tell you that it's in Indiana.

Intellectually, there is zero difference between the bulk of their fan base and that of the '49ers during the Montana/Young years or last season’s Patriots.

I write them off as akin to the retarded rednecks who see the word "Georgia" and think, "Gee whiz! Thar's is whar I live! Guess I'll root fo' dem."

That would explain why ND has the best fajitas in the nation. Now, if you had said Irish Catholic, I would have been more inclined to support you.

ND has been pretty successful. That is a big part of their support. But more importantly, their support in the media has FAR out exceeded their success. If they win a game, the whole country hears about. If they lose, then the whole nation hears about the huge upset (even if it isn't an upset).

I might be going out on a limb here, but all of you sound like a bunch of jeolous, whiny bitches.

If Tech had the same deal as ND you'd be saying:

"Wow, what a huge national fan base we have,"
"Any team would be crazy to pass up an exclusive network contract,"
"If college football bows to our whims, so be it,"
"All you jeolous bastiches can suck my _______!"

I might be going out on a limb here but I'd say you don't even sound like a Tech fan, Floridian with only 161 posts.

Alex, that would be "What is Bobby Dodd's worst decision?"

Notre Dame's TV contract expires in 2010. Their ratings are in free fall. See here:

Their advertising rates fell 40% last year. Two more seasons trending like the last two and ND will be much more receptive to conference life.

As a point of comparison, the SEC on CBS averaged a 3.5 in 2007.

Weis has 2008 and 2009 to win HUGE and get the ratings back up. They won't go into the 2010 season with Weis as HC unless the ratings are back up. Because NBC won't pay them what they want.

I think ND's TV deal is in deep trouble.
