"Tricky Dick" was an assistant under Carson, Fulcher, and Rodgers before getting the HFC job at a then-hapless UVA program. He coached on both sides of the ball, but I knew him best as the Head Freshman Coach I worked for with our 5-0-1 Frog team in 1972.

Though many in later years would associate him, and rightly so, with being an Associate AD to Dooley at UGag, he sent a son through NATS and continued to contribute to both the General Scholarship and Alexander-Tharpe Funds even though he was working in Athens.

With a Masters in Psychology, he was a motivator, teacher, and a leader and in a much different era, was all about "don't be afraid to put your arm on a kid's shoulder" as you're correcting mistakes and teaching/coaching between plays.

Last I heard back in April of 2017, he was battling Alzheimer's.

RIP, You Old Redhead. And thanks.

Coach Bestwick was a good man and good coach. His leadership of the freshman teams was impressive. Blessings to his family.

A good guy, and another link to the past gone. Sad!
