For those that have not heard, Mike Mooney of the 90 Championship team passed away today.

Apparently Mike's health was poor due to his weight. What a shame to lose him at such a young age.

What a player he was though. I remember when we tied UNC that year I believe Mike was out of the lineup with an ankle injury. It exhibited how important Mike was to that lineup. He absolutely dominated all of the DL he payed against that year.

RIP Mike.

Mike was a good guy. He worked harder than anyone else to make himself a top D1 football player. I remember seeing him almost every day spending extra time in the weight room and on the track trying to become better.

RIP Mike.

I'll always remember "Big Mike" for being down field where the tackle had been made and just literally picking up opposing players and throwing them off our runner like they were cord wood. RIP indeed.

This is terrible terrible news. I remember my freshman year at GT, I went to that hole in the wall crap club called the Wreck Room and after several pitchers of beer ended up meeting Mike Mooney and some other football players. He was huge.

This is terrible news. Just terrible. Big Tech loss.

Lived on the same floor as Mike in '89. Great guy, sorry to hear of his passing. RIP, Big Mike....Mike

Good God in Heaven.

Just in shock right now. What Coach Ross must be thinking/feeling?

God bless his family.

We Love You, Big Mike.

Everyone says that football players are overpaid premadonnas(well, not everybody). But what so many people don't realize is how much they sacrifice their bodies to play this game. You are lucky to escape without permanent injury, and it is not too uncommon to die early. Football needs to look at some extra safety measures, perhaps a weight limit and some better form of helmet. With linemen getting so big these days, I think we are going to see a massive problem in 20 years with their health.

He had weighed 400-500 pounds for many years now. You can't do that or it's going to catch up with you.

That's what killed him, not the football...

Prayers for him and his family -

Very sad to hear of his passing.

I was in school with him, and yes, Barrel, I quaffed a few beers with him and Big Jim Lavin at the Wreck Room.

One of my favorite memories of big # 70 was him DOMINATING that wrestler from athens trying to impersonate a football player, bill goldberg. Mooney absolutlely killed the guy in athens on our march to the MNC.

RIP, Mike.

I don't remember which game it was. I was young and didn't really pay attention to offensive linemen. Our QB dropped back and the line was spread out. 2 defenders ran at Mooney. There was tons of room around him, but somehow he blocked both of them. Knocked them on their butts. He was like a magnet or something.

Wish we had more Moon Pies on Saturday. He was a good player and was not scared of anybody. He humbled the great and the small on Saturday. He will be missed.

Hard to belive at 6-7 and 300 plus pounds that Moon Pie was such a good basketball and tennis player. What a good athlete that can play other sports andcan move with his feet.He was a good one.
