RIP Stan Gann GT QB 1960-1962 (Link)

Rest in peace, Mr. Gann.

Stan "The Man" Gann and his wife lived a few doors down the street from my wife and myself in Warner Robins, Georgia in the 1970s. We used to take walks together after supper. When he became head coach at Northside High, he told me he had gone to see Coach Dodd. He said he asked Coach Dodd what kind of offense he should run. He said Coach Dodd told him that it didn't matter what kind of offense he ran, as long as he could get his players to believe in it. I always remembered that story.

Well, Stan Gann was a good and brave man. I pray for his family. Some losses really affect me more than others. I haven't seen or talked to Stan Gann in many decades. But, this loss hurts a lot. Coach Dodd is recruiting some really good players for his team up there.

Eat at the Varsity and always, and one more time, "To Hell With Georgia!"

The late Atlanta Journal Sports Editor Jesse Outlar wrote a column in 1962, when Lotheridge permanently took over from Gann entitled "The Day Stan the Man Became a Man" (or something like that). I found it in the AJC archives, but you have to pay to access it, dammit. I remember reading that article when I was a rat at Tech in 1962.

I always thought the 1962 team was a couple of bad breaks away from really being great. Should have beaten LSU. Auburn, and Mizzou

I got a trial membership and saved that Outlar article. As soon as I can get it in a format that is transferrable and READABLE, I will post it. I also immediately cancelled the trial subscription. LOL

Look at the beautiful packed pre-expansion stadium in this video of the 1961 Tech-Rice game with Gann as QB. Also get a glimpse of Lotheridge late in the game. And, boy, the turf looks outstanding. Great days !!!!

Supersize..., thank you so much for the Youtube link! My Dad still lights up when he talks about watching, and listening to, the great "Billy the Kid" Lotheridge. He would listen to Al Ciraldo cover the Tech games on the radio in Augusta. He also remembers Stan Gann playing quarterback for the Jackets.

May the Good Lord be with Mr. Gann's friends and family.

GO JACKETS!

You have Augusta ties? Do you live in the Augusta area now? I was not born here, but I did grow up here, and I worked at Oak Ridge my first 2+ years out of Tech, but I have been back Augusta since 1972

OK, I hope you can read this article. Outlar's key words are the last ones in the article

Yes, I grew up in Augusta. I have spoken to you before. I took a math class, at Westside High School, that your niece taught.

Thanks, again, for the information you have posted on Mr. Gann and Mr. Lotheridge.

GO JACKETS!

AHHH. I am old. I forget easily. LOL But I do remember at least the conversation about my niece. I probably never knew you, but do you think I might know your dad or knew him back in the day?

RIP Coach Gann. I only had him one year at Northside before Conrad Nix took over. I remember my freshman year walking into the weight room and dude was killing it. Helluva coach, Helluva guy.

No worries. You once sent me a PM on Stingtalk about our Augusta ties. My Dad graduated from Richmond Academy (ARC) in 1965. And he didn't go to Tech. Therefore, I don't think you would have known him. I remember you mentioning you were a freshmen at Tech in 1962. That means you were probably at Grant Field the day Tech beat #1 Alabama. My Dad listened to it on the radio.

GO JACKETS!
