Which is the better premium site? I asked this awhile back but never joined. I'm leaning towards Rivals, which one do u guys prefer?

It depends on the year. Before last year I would say Rivals. Then last year Scout pulled to about even. Now its clearly Scout in my opinion. As far as rating players goes, Scout is far more in depth and covers more kids.

I think ESPN is putting more money into Scout.com than SI is into Rivals.

Which site is better in 2002? That is when I am thinking of joining.

Scout isn't affiliated with ESPN, and Rivals isn't affiliated with SI. Not sure where you got that from. Unless you're just kidding.

Scout is a partner with FoxSports, and Rivals is apparently now a part of Yahoo! Sports.

Personally, I prefer Scout. There is a lot more inside info, practice reports, etc. on the Insiders board than there is on Rivals. I feel like Scout does a better job of actually evaluating the prospects, too. Rivals tends to pander to the SEC schools that buy a lot of subscriptions, and overrates a lot of the players that commit to those schools.

Hmm... I guess I am thinking of Scouts Inc. I thought they were the same thing.

That is well said...but here is one thing I have tracked with numbers.

Rivals has a vastly superior database if you like to do your own research and video look-ups. There are also almost twice as many GT "interests" ...particularly early on in the process.

Rivals tends to get more articles from other writers and national writers on GT recruits...particularly since we recruit all over.

No disrespect to the GT writers for Scout...but Rivals does not have the sheer amount of volunteer writers that sometimes come out with some amateurish questions...they have to go through more approvals. Tech's volunteer writers are doing a much better job this year.

Scout's Hiver Insider board is far superior to Rivals premium board...except for hoops maybe. Gapanther is one poster that makes a HUGE difference over there...as does MasterB as far as tracking down info. GP has a good understanding of the game and what it takes to coach being that he has a background in the athletic department at Pittsburgh...then adopted GT when he moved south because he hates UGA.

After a commitment is made...all boards find out about the same time now...as does the AJC. It is almost as if an email blast goes out!

I do know that our coaches use both sites in a variety of ways...I will stop there.

I think it is good to have both...it is good for Tech fans and we should want them each to do well.

Rivals-jacketsonline.com
pros-
1. Great basketball recruiting coverage by jerry myer and justin young. You can pretty much get any answer ever needed out of them.
2. If your in to message boards, the national board has some flavor of all kinds. funny vids, news, cool articles and some good arguing.
cons-
1. the jackets online site is very good but does not cover football or basketball practices, and does not have a "REAL" insider like gapanther or bulldogstinger at scout. but brandon does do a hell of a job going on what he's got to work with considering the demand.

Scout-gojackets.com
pros-
1. VERY GOOD coverage on GT football practices, pictures of the practice and recruits attending. They who is there and when and mostly how it went.
2. They give you an "official offer" list by position as to what recruits have official commitable offers.
3. there are more members on the scout site so interaction and discussion is more likely between GT fans.

cons-
1. I feel like past the actual GT site, there is nothing much else to look at and the rivals site is more in depth.

I have a membership at rivals (GTland03) while my buddy has one at scout and we switch passwords to access both sites!! im addicted.

I prefer Scout for football. They have more "inside" articles & info on the premium board. Barndon (Rivals), for all his good work, lives in Florida & can't possibly cover as much or as quickly as the 4-5 scout guys.

For basketball, Justin Young (rivals)is the most informed writer around when it comes to GT BB. Unfortunately, Rivals national guys recognized this & hired him to be a National Writer. Consequently, he doesn't spend as much time on the GT board as he used to. Scout's "inside guy" (RamblinRed) seemed to get a lot of his info from Justin.

I like them both...but if you can only go with ONE---go with Scout.

Thanks for the in depth feedback guys, I'm gonna go with Scout.com

Well....I joined Scout this morning and have to say, I think I am going to cancel my membership within the 7 day trial period. Nothing against Scout, but I still have access to so much of the recruiting info. on their site without having a membership. I still can look at our commits and prospects, the only thing the membership gets me is access to look at the videos of the recruits, which I don't really need. And rivals is the same way also, I just don't think it's worth $10/month to look at the vids when I get everything else I need off the site for free.

The forums, even the insider forums, I just didn't like. I prefer Stingtalk for my forums a lot more.

Is there something that I'm missing that can be taken advantage of with the membership? I looked at the practice reports/pics forum and it hasn't been updated or posted on since August or Sep? What's up with that?

Value is an individual decision. A lot of the value to some is the lead time in getting info. As time passes, everyone knows everything.

As far as the practice reports, these are reports and pics from open practices in spring and pre-season. It is not intended to report during the season. They don't talk about formations and certain info that could be used by the competition, so there's not much point in reports after the season starts.

The time to join is during the height of recruiting rumor season, or spring practice or pre-season. That is when the info is most enjoyed... if you are going to join.

Neither service is the alpha or the omega. It depends on your interest focus and your budget.

I'll echo that GP1 has very good football judgment and MB has very direct sources. When reading GP1 you get a sense that what he does not say is sometimes as interesting as what he does say. Red does a great job at distilling GT hoops info for the GT fan.

Scout has a larger GT subscription base. They also consistently grade GT recruits higher than Rivals. Which is the chicken and which is the egg is debatable, or even if there is any connection between the two.

As far as message boards, Scout has the original GT sports message board, which passed through various incarnations from the original Mike Greenberg/Jamie Newberg clevernet days.

totally understand about the practice reports and giving away info, I was hoping for more of a who's participating in practice (injuries, visitors, things like that)

I'll surf around it for another day or two and see if it tickles me.

i personally like rivals better. Just the overall site is better.
