Lot of talk from ACC schools that they have "figured out" how to stop us. I think it will serve as good motivation for our team. I am suddenly looking forward a lot more more to the UNC and VT games.

However, if everyone is better prepared for it this time around (I well aware of how CPJ feels about this), I think the implementation of the run n gun may save us. There was a lot of talk about it early in the Spring, but I am not sure if it is for real. We didn't pass much last year and when we did for one series of downs or so, it was very uneven. So it wasn't a credible threat to be used for significant parts of the game. Frankly, Josh struggled with the pass. The scrimmage I saw in the Spring did not convince me we have improved enough on the "gun" portion of the offense.

Any opinions as to what percent of our offense will be run n gun?

I don't think we will pass much. If things are going well we won't be throwing more than 10-12 times a game. Hopefully we can be more efficient when we do though.
 
Been saying it since half time of the LSU game. Not passing is going to land us in a world of pain. We will never win a National Championship unless we learn to pass.

And we should've tried passing more in the Chick-Fil-A game. Paul Johnson relying on the run 90%+ of the time was stupid.

You probably said we should come out slinging it at half time of the UGA game too. Do what you do best.

We threw some passes and didn't complete them. If the passing game was working at all, rest assured you would have seen it more.

But play selection was NOT our problem against LSU. Special teams, turnovers, and execution errors were our problem.

LSU had more talent and a few of us realized that going into the game. The majority, however, were giddy from the UGA win and took LSU lightly given a disappointing season in search of a QB. Everywhere else they had NFL prospects.

LSU had talent better than their record and we needed to execute in all phases to beat them. It didn't happen.

But, no, calling more passes was not the remedy we needed.
 
I haven't seen a good Tech team get demolished like that since the 2000 Gator Bowl. Miami beat the snot out of us, and they went on to win a MNC the next year. Everyone thought we could handle them because of their record, but Miami's defense stifled the best QB to ever play for us.
LSU was a lot better than their record last year, and coming off a MNC. We may look back on that game and realize we were just first in line for the Tigers with Jefferson settled in at QB.
Onto the topic at hand. The passing game does need some work. We were pretty awful last year in all phases(OL blocking, throwing, and occasionally catching) I think improvement to just mediocre will take some pressure off the run game, and some wear and tear to the backs.
HOWEVER.... If you think we're going to throw it more than 15 times a game, you are mistaken. Our bread and butter will be running the football. Always has been for PJ(when he's gotten his own personnel. Just look at Hawaii after he was entrenched). We have to perfect the running portion, and just improve from awful to mediocre in our passing game. Do that and we're the best offense in the league.
 
Opening up the running playbook a bit more, as the second year allows, will do wonders to keep opposing defenses off balance... we should be attempting 12-15 per game through the air, some of these for big yardage when the D is caught stalking the run.... but we must keep to our strength and it lies in Nesbitt's reads and Dwyer and Co.'s ability to rush over, under and through the opposition
 
When I read the subject of this thread, I thought it was going to be a joke.

I like what PJ and JD have said about throwing. We aren't going to throw just for the hell of it. It just depends on what the defense is giving us.

I do agree we've got to be better at throwing. I think we are.

We executed poorly in the LSU game, we executed greatly in the 2nd half of the UGA game. We made adjustments that allowed greater runs in the 2nd half of the UGA game.

Good thing we've improved for this season, because last season's football team could only beat great football teams if we played 100% with virtually no error.

Somebody else said that our passing game wasn't working against LSU. Our running game wasn't working at all either. But I guess as champ would say, "do what you're best at." Our best sucked that day.

I'm still glad we beat UGA though, and have confidence in PJ to have another great season!

If you look at birddog and smartfootball posts, you can see how we weren't 100% even in the UGA game.
 
If we are going to use the "run and shoot" to "save" us we are going to lose, and possibly lose bad.

The pass is used as a dagger to the heart in this offense not as something we can rest on. when we pass it will usually be a streaking WR for a TD not a 5 yard hook.

So what you're saying is you didn't watch the game? The running game was working fairly well, we just were not executing on key downs. We couldn't pass at all because the OL couldn't keep LSU out of our backfield.

Neither our running nor passing game got us through key downs when it counted most. Working "fairly well" isn't nearly good enough.

Huh?

Maybe my memory is a little fuzzy, but I seem to recall wanting to run more, because our passes were falling incomplete. Had we been able to actually complete some passes, then that might have been different, but passing is pretty clearly what stymied us in that game.


What will make us more successful is not passing more, it's completing the passes we do call more consistently. Until we can do that, it's dumb to call more pass plays. If we can up our completion percentage from 45% to 55% we will probably get one more TD pass per game. That's the goal PJ has set, btw, and has restated that in several interviews over the summer.

Well, good. I trust you when you say he's restated it in several interviews. In one of the interviews I read he didn't seem too thrilled about having to pass more, so I was a little concerned. Glad to know he's open to pass (pun not intended but it's convenient so I'll claim it was done purposely).
 
In a perfect world, he says we'll rush for 300 and pass for 150.

Don't know if that makes you feel better or not, but there it is. I doubt we ever call much more than 10 pass plays a game, but if you look at Navy he averaged more per attempt and more per completion than anyone else in the nation, several years running.

We passed more in that game than we did all year. IMO, that's why the offense did so poorly. Nesbitt passed it 24 times. Dwyer, Jones, Peeples, and Cox combined for 22 carries. Dwyer was averaging like 7 yards a pop but only touched the ball 10 times. I don't care what offense we run, Dwyer has to get more touches than that.
 
Who really cares how much we do or don't pass? I know every one of you would take a win like we did against UGA where we completed ONE pass.

Just win the damn game. if it takes more passing (ala Duke last year), then fine. If we run, more better. Just win baby.

Didn't realize we passed so much relative to other games. Thanks for bringing that up. Hopefully we'll be more successful at it next season against fierce opponents.
