Saban backs down

"What made the Smith situation even worse than the Turman saga is Saban blocked his transfer, keeping him in Tuscaloosa, yet simultaneously ostracized him from the program and prevented him from using the athletic facilities. Smith also wrote a letter to the Alabama appeals committee claiming that his “locker was cleaned out and all of my personal belongings in the trash. … These personal items included my family photos, written goals, inspirational and sentimental items memorializing my deceased former friend, roommate and teammate, Altee Tenpenny, and items of personal value from my former teammates.”

Wow. Good ol' Saban.

Wow. Disturbing if true. Bammers won't care though JUST WIN BABY ROLL DAMN TAHDE

The fact Saban would prevent a player, Maurice Smith, who graduated in three years, from transferring to another SEC school was even more ridiculous than Kirby Smart blocking a backup running back, A.J. Turman, from transferring to an SEC school, Georgia Tech or Miami.

No, not really Jeff. It is pretty much the pot calling the kettle black. In fact Kirby would only let Thurman transfer to a Florida school not named UF or Miami. That is ridiculously more restrictive than Saban saying any non-SEC school.

When Randy Shannon was coaching at Miami, didn't he restrict a QB from transferring out to any SEC or ACC school?

It is the NCAA's fault. A player should be able to transfer, before or after a season - not during, to any school of his choosing without punishment.

Players should not be able to transfer freely. If they could, recruiting would never end.

So if a school like GT takes a long shot on a kid, and GT develops that long shot into a great player. He should be able to transfer to Alabama or Clemson now that he is more attractive to them.

Isn't college supposed to be about helping student athletes? If the S/A wants to throw away an education because of a good season, then tough for us.

Let students and schools agree to 1,2,3 or 4 year contracts. When a contract is up, the player can transfer freely and the school can drop freely. While in contract, the student cannot play for another team unless the school agrees and the school is required to use a scholarship for the student unless the student agrees to a release.

This protects the student and would make for interesting recruiting (Alabama offers 1 year but GT offers 4 years to the same student).

Eh, just simplify the whole matter and make all schollies 4 yrs that roll to 5 if redshirted. The rules for transfer within that time frame are all laid out ahead of time when the official offer is made just like the rules for maintaining eligibility and/or dismissal. The transfer rules can be specific to program as long as they are upfront and transparent from the get go. This would allow programs some flexibility to sweeten the offer over other schools.

College is about higher education, not student athletes. If college athletes want to pay their own way like non-scholarship students, then they should be able to do what they want. So in that regard I agree that a walk on player should be able change schools and teams whenever they want. Once they enter a contract, via the scholarship, they give up some of that freedom just like a kid on some other scholarships can't always just walk away.

I am on board with the general sentiment but what kind of scholarship doesn't let you just walk away?

There has to be a way for the school to part ways with a player. Otherwise, 1/4 of all uGA scholarships would be behind bars.
You either missed this part of my post:

or you're making a joke.

I'm assuming the latter but emojis work wonders.

ROTC scholarships for one. I've seen others where if you didn't complete the semester or graduate you owed money back.
