Wow what a surprise, a must win game and we lay an egg against an inferior team.

This team plays with no heart. None. And it starts at the top. You get all this bull**** talk in the papers last week from our players saying that they played a bad game, and that they would see BC in the ACC Champ game. These same players came out not focused as was evident by the number of penalties and mental mistakes that were made all game long.

Go get me all the practice report guys on the Hive that think they know how to evaluate our players. "We have the deepest, most experienced line we've EVER had since I can remember". "AJ Smith is a monster, he will be a great one." "Andrew Gardner will be playing on Sundays". "This is the first time in the Chan Gailey era that we have a cohesive unit". "Chan prefers more mobile lineman over size".

BLAH BLAH BLAH... Our Offensive Line sucks. Once again, our coaches are realizing their problems with the line later than the rest of us. Anyone noticed the complete merry go round of players playing on the line today while Gailey and Dallesandires tried to figure out who was better than who? Guess what coaches, you should know this by now. But let me give you a hint. #61 and #60 are not your strongest options. Don't know how many times I have to say it. Your starting right tackle is a serious problem too, but thanks for benching him and at least recognizing that he was a problem.

Taylor Bennett, I'm not off his bandwagon yet as I think he get very little help in the play calling department and with WR who have the dropsies. I see a guy who seems like he has all the tools to be a solid QB. He's not great, but he doesn't kill us. The INT was just bad luck. He needs to work on his 3rd down efficiency and understand better how plays develop on 3rd down. One thing I thought he did VERY well was move around in the pocket (and you cannot teach that). If the line was more consistent, I think Taylor would be more consistent. Several times I saw Taylor looking to throw, but then having to move in the pocket to avoid the pressure, and then having to find the play downfield again.

What the HELL is wrong with our defense? It seems like Tenuta cured it after the first quarter but still.

Here is MY biggest problem with this team. Their attitude. After the BC game you would have thought you would see a little more urgency from them. Nope. We came into this game completely unprepared and lacking focus. Penalties and Costly Mistakes was the theme this week. These guys play like they are waiting on their teammate to win the game instead of themselves going out and making a difference. Everyone's standing around waiting on the other person to produce. There is definitely a lack of mental toughness and preparation by this team, and we've now seen it in two straight games.

Gailey is a players coach. They love him. He's a family guy who supports his players. That's great. But sometimes you have to get in their ear and let them know their scholarship doesn't automatically entitle them to have their asses wiped for them and little gold star stickers everytime they make mommy and daddy happy. Gailey caters to these pussies like they're in romper room. He allowed them to believe their own bull**** hype about how good they were.

If Gailey doesn't turn this around AND beat UGA, I hope DRAd shows this joker the door.

2-5 in the last 7 ballgames and these kids have the attitude that they are a ACC Championship caliber team? Give me a break. That starts at the top. We have a bunch of talkers who don't know how to produce. They look sexy on paper, but then as soon as its time to put on the pads, they fold like the paper men that they are. If Gailey doesn't start yelling and screaming, he's going to lose his job.

Do you feel better now? Take away three incredibly stupid or unlucky plays and we win going away.

But supposedly the OL is nursing quite a few injuries. I'd like to see Rhodes at TE instead of a freshman DE.

And one area that I think Chan needs to rethink is not playing his freshman. Play the freshman now because we do not have the depth until probation runs its course.

This team should not have to rely on three incredibly stupid or unlucky plays to win a game against one of the worst coached teams in the ACC.

There is nothing to add to this --except for the history of games like this in the CCG era:

2007 (2-1) @UVA 23-28
2006 (9-2) ACCCG vs WF 6-9
2005 (3-1) vs NCSt 14-17
2004 (2-0) @UNC 13-34
2003 (5-3) @Duke 17-41
2002 (4-1) vs WF 21-24

...each game represented an opportunity to make a statement --to win the seemingly winnable game and move forward. Each and every time over the last six years a GT team that was arguably better than the opponent came out flat (see Duke, UNC and IMO the ACCCG) --in some instances regrouped and took over late only to lose late (today and two years ago prime examples). It's never going to change --I realize that now after actually thinking this year would be diffrent.

I hate to agree with BOR, sorta stings a little, but yeah. If we were as talented as all of us thought we were, we should have easily overcome 6 some odd stupid or unlucky plays vs a team as bad as UVA. They're wretched. We must be mediocre tops to lose to a team as bad as them.

Good teams don't false start on 4th and inches...
Good teams don't fumble punts...
Good teams catch 18 yd pass plays on 3rd and 20...
...in the fourth quarter

I won't (and can't) disagree with anything you said BOR. Seems like a straight-forward and fair analysis.

I would like to pick up on and emphasize one thing you wrote. It is in the above quote. When you see an abundance of mental errors, it usually means the team is not focused. Getting the team focused is one of the major measurements of good coaching.

I too like Chan. I like him very much, think he is a real fine person and believe he is building a good foundation. I have supported him since he arrived at Tech. But he has to win these kinds of ball games to be successful. Over confidence and mental letdowns will get us beat, whether it is dropped passes, false starts on 4th and 1, or looking away before you catch the ball. Coaching is needed to focus on the "instant" and stop these killer mistakes.

Very well said!

what about losing to clemson at home 39-3 and who could forgot the UTAH blowout bowl game! worst ever bowl loss in our history and worse loss to clemson as well i think, then throw in the worse losses ever to duke, and UGA 51-7 plus never finishing a season ranked in the top 25....not success in my opinion

I would like to have seen D Brown ... he played some TE last year and is a lineman ... don't think he would have committed the penalty

You failed.

It's attitudes like yours infecting the fan base the last 5 years that have given Gailey a free pass on some ugly football.

We simply have to make plays when the game is on the line. Bottom line is we don't. We can blame it on schemes, play calling, who's in the lineup, injuries, depth, youth, whatever the hell you want...but we don't make plays. Coaches coach, and players play, but if players continually screw up when the games on the line the coaches pay the price.

Personally I think it's time to open up the competition for playing time again. We either need to see significant improvement from TB for example, or Booker or Nesbitt needs to get a shot. The OL isn't getting the job done so changes need to be made. Some WRs need to learn how to catch the ball and become playmakers. Kick returners need to produce, and on and on.

This isn't high school nor is it day care. I love the fact that the players love Chan. But this is about winning. I would hope that over the last 8 games DRad is considering whether we're headed in a direction that will support the plans he has for GTAA. If Chan had won 11 or 12 last year and the ACCCG, he would have earned some relief from the pressure. Since we didn't, he's right back on the hot seat.

This was a team loss - there were breakdowns by every facet of the team, QB, RB, WR, TE, OL, DL, LB, DB, special teams, coaching. You name it and we had a breakdown in that area. So in that sense BoR is on the money.

On the other hand, to say these guys have no heart is harsh. They really fought back hard to overcome the 21-7 deficit after the 1st quarter.

My conclusions from this game are: (1) we are not as good as I thought, (2) Virginia is better than last year (they couldn't have been worse), and (3) I hate Charlottesville.

The possibility of a great season is gone, but ours guys can still have a good season if they beat Georgia.

I agree that the players have heart. I didn't see any lack of desire or effort, what I saw was a lack of execution when it mattered. Or all 11 executing on the same play. But I think we are potentially as good as we thought...the talent is there. UVA is not a good team, and I think the rest of the year will bear that out. I don't hate Charlottesville, but I sure would like to know why we always choke there.

Re: Some Things "Never Change!"

Well, BOR it's good to see that you are still saying the same things about our illustrious HC, CG. I have
been away from the boards for over two years now and the climate on the Flats is no different now than it was two years ago when I lasted posted on this
board.

The DOC's and FOC's will never change their views about our Head Ball Coach.

Only trouble is our Head Ball Coach could not carry the real Head Ball Coach's jock!:laugher:

Disagree slighly on one point....

The possibility of a great season is gone, but ours guys can still have a good season if they beat Georgia.

10-2 is a great season for all but maybe 2-5 programs in the country. Is it doable for Tech this year?...doesn't seem probable at all. IMO,beating Ga. is a must for CCG to be back on the flats next year regardless of how many other wins are conjured up.

Clemson is a "key" game...lose this one at home and the season will be ugly. I am afraid that our lack of physical play on the LOS will be exposed even worse by Clemson, but OTOH this seems to be the type of game this program finds a way to win. Another year, another year wondering what we have and which GT team willl show up.:pat:

I'm sick of this mantra that if I'm not a sour, angry internet asshole I'm somehow directly responsible for Tech's football failures.

This was a good post:
