I have noticed that our defensive backs have been in perfect positions to make interception (or possibly have) but the WRs for the other teams just rip the ball away from them an get the catch. Shouldn't they just bat the ball down instead trying to make the pick?

I don't really know any good examples of what you're talking about, except for 50/50 balls where they did the best they could to make a play on the ball. The one example that stands out vs Maryland, our DB wasn't in a position to do any better than he did, and the receiver made a good play.

Depends On The Situation

Generally speaking, if you put yourself in a position where the receiver gets the ball a third of the time, you get the ball a third of the time, and it drops a third of the time, you'll take it!

There have not been that many passes where the wr wrestles the ball away from us, but it has happened a few times, and you as a fan get frustrated and the negative outcome sticks in your memory. Still, that technique is what CJT teaches and I'm glad he does. A turnover is many times more important than a reception.

However, when you're in the end game and you have the lead, you bat the ball down in many situations.

We've batted the ball down a few times, but we also go for the INT a lot.

When the ball is completed over perfect coverage, just give the WR credit and move on to the next down.

It happened at VT once, maybe twice also. I don't disagree with the strategy though. We also had an interception in the Maryland game on 4th down where we lost yardage b/c of the interception.

It's (sort of) similar to trying to pick up a fumble and run it back as opposed to falling on it. One is safer, the other more exciting (and morale-boosting :) ) We lost a fumble that we should've had by trying to pick it up at least once this year (can't remember which game), but we've also scored on defense after picking it up.

You are right. Bat the ball down FIRST if there is chance for a "tie" on the ball .Jump high with ONE hand and rip it down ,when you need to be sure.

At VT it was very disheartening because it happened twice on third and very long (15+ yards).

I went back and watched the VT game again and it only happened once to JWD (I thought twice until I watched it - the 2nd one JWD was off balance and couldn't have defended or INT'd the pass). If he had knocked it down, we probably would've ended up with better field position than if he had caught it - or at least the same FP (VT was 3rd 'n 20 around their own 10 yard line - the catch was made somewhere around the 40).

It's my opinion that the DBs should think situationally about defending the pass - there are certain times when a breakup is better than an INT.

Yeah, but guys, watch the actual plays. All the times I can remember that happening in the past few games, the DB couldn't have made a play to 'knock it away' anyway - it was all he could do to leap the same time as the other guy and try to get his hand in there at all, which ended up looking like a tie ball by the time they came back down.

I think you guys are chasing ghosts.

Hey at this point, I think it's a perfect time for the off week. Of course, we need to get Reggie healthy necause his ability to run may mean the difference in a W and an L at Frank Howard Field in 11 days.

Also though, I think this off week will be best utilized to shore up the secondary. Tackling and making sure to bend and not break will be covered by Tenuta, and they will come out at Clemson and look to make Proctor's life miserable.

I know people are saying that this game doesn't mean near as much as Miami, and that is true in terms of winning the Coastal division, but I will be in those stands a week from Saturday in Death Valley, and will be very excited to see us go for 3 straight against our main ACC rival!!!
