Playing a linebacker at safety might explain some of our downfield coverage issues.

He plays like Jamal Adams, just nowhere near as good. Not a coverage guy, just a downhill safety. That’s why we had him at safety, just didn’t play him like a downhill strong safety. We played him as a second free safety.

It's not uncommon for big college safeties to move to LB in the NFL. NFL needs LBs that can cover so a 220 lb safety can likely gain the 10-15 lbs necessary to make the transition. 250 lb NFL HOF linebacker Bryan Urlacker was a college safety at Nevada New Mexico, for example.

edit: Oh yeah, the safety also needs to be tallish so 6'2 Carpenter is ideal

5 years and you have to want to be a LB. Riq saw himself as a safety even when numbers were light at LB. Can’t put this on the coaches.
