Shawn Davis will stay put as Georgia Tech’s place-kicker

I think we should recruit another kicker. Seems like Brenton King isn't panning out. Yeah, "he was injured", but he's over his injury and he's still not beating Davis out. We can go out and get a top kicker because most schools don't give scholarships to kickers.

Dude was satisfactory Sat. Time to flush it from memory and move on? Eleven one game seasons etc?

Not really. Almost all of his kicks were with the wind at his back, including the extra point he missed. His kicks into the wind were struggles.

At least the walk-on is kicking for free. Tech might be paying the scholarship guy just to show up for 4 years. I'm inclined to see how they do as the season progresses rather than judge after 2 games. I seem to recall Butker missing several in the 30-40 yard range when he first came to Tech.

Butker was also sailing KOs into the endzone. The bulovas flip might end up costing us a few games this season on KOs alone.

CPJ: "How they look in practice isn't everything. You never know what guys will do in a game situation."

Kicker: *fails hard in a game situation*

CPJ: "Can't take him out, he's better than the other guy in practice."

K

CPJ has a methodology. Don't knock it.

Butker's first year stats/summary below for reference. Not saying Davis needs to be held to this standard, just want to keep the comparisons in this thread grounded in truth.

Played in all 13 games ... Georgia Tech's leading scorer ... 83 points were seventh-most single-season points by kicking in Tech history ... Converted 53 of 54 PATs, tying for second-most single-season PATs in school history ... Only miss was result of bad snap at Miami ... Made 10 of 14 field goal attempts (.714) ... Booted five field goals longer than 40 yards ... Made nine of final 11 field goal attempts ... 30 of 73 kickoffs were touchbacks ... Recorded four solo tackles ... Got college career off to good start by making 8-of-8 PATs and kicking seven of nine kickoffs for touchbacks vs. Elon (Aug. 31) ... Booted 49-yard field goals at Duke (Sept. 14) and vs. Virginia Tech (Sept. 26) ... Made all eight PATs vs. Syracuse (Oct. 19) ... Made 4-of-4 PATs and converted two field goals vs. Georgia (Nov. 30) ... 2013-14 ACC Honor Roll.

I don't see why King didn't get the second half of the last game. I get letting Davis get PT to calm the nerves, but I would think you'd see how each handle the pressure of the game.
