Shawn Jones Voted into GA Sports HOF

When he was on - he was the best we ever had - even better than Joe Hamilton. Thomas and Hamilton are tied for 2nd. Shawn's speed rated with Thomas and when on, his passing could be very good. Hamilton was a better passer but not as dynamic of runner and Thomas was with him running but not as good of a passer. All 3 made for some great days and big wins.

Hamilton was a better player overall.

What I remember about Shawn is how strong he was for a QB. Many times a DL would hit him and try to pull him down but he was so strong that he could pull away from the DL and then make a run down the field. One guy didn’t typically sack him.

I think he's coaching now back in Thomasville. Heard he's coaching at the small private college there that has started a football program, for vets and military students. Former Tech assistant Buzz Preston is or was on the staff too

One of these Mooneys is a lot bigger now and on our roster ...

Congrats! Long overdue

Congratulations, Shawn! One of the best Tech quarterbacks I saw play. Shawn Jones had all the great attributes you want in a quarterback. He had a strong arm, was an accurate passer and had break away speed in the open field. In addition, he usually made good decisions on when to throw or run.
Of course, 1990 was the season where all of his talents were put on full display. I can still vividly remember a play, in the first half of the '90 UVA game, when Shawn outran UVA's defense for a touchdown that we badly needed. Jim Nantz (on the CBS broadcast) said..."Shawn Jones gets the first down....AND the TOUCHDOWN! TOUCHDOWN... GEORGIA TECH!"

GO JACKETS!

With '89/'90 vintage Jones at QB, we win out with 1 exception the rest of this year. Not a dig at Sims.

I have followed GT football since the mid-70’s and I’ll tell you the best QB play I ever saw was from mid-1989 through the end of 1990 season by Shawn Jones. A lot of credit also goes the the supporting cast on offense, but he was a joy to watch. He was big, fast and had a good arm.

Josh Nesbitt is in the mix for whatever rankings comes after 1. Jones and 1. Hamilton. The Nesbitt play taking the ball back away from the FSU defender after the fumble late in the 2009 game around 12:30 am due to the thunderstorm delay was legendary. Nesbitt carried the offense on his back when needed. Those 1st 2 years with the spread option offense with the elite playmaker’s on offense was pretty unstoppable.
