Shawn Jones

great great player. I have a story. Tech had been horrible for really a long time except for a year or two under Curry when we were pretty good. In 1987 we go 2-9 and 3-8 in 1988 and start 0-3 in 1989 playing Maryland for the cellar. We have a freshman QB. We have lost 16 conference games in a row and it's pretty grim. Ga Tech pulls it out 28-24 to stop the streak and I tell a huge UGA "decent" friend (yes I know they are rare) that we have a GD QB who is very very good and to watch out. We go onto to beat #14 Clemson the next week at Clemson 30-14 and then we are in trouble against UNC but he beats a blitz and makes a long run and we win 17-14. We finish 7-4 and beat UGA 33-22. Then onto 1990 and a National Championship. I really give him a lot of credit of starting a good run for GT only interrupted by Bill Lewis. Even under Bill Lewis, he had an FSU that finished in the top five 14 years in a row, beat if we could only recover an onside kick. We couldn't and lost or that win would have gone down in history,

Multipletiple?
So that's manymany?

He's still in coaching, right?

I'm pretty sure he is still coaching in Thomasville, GA, at Thomasville High School. I saw him and a very short conversation with him about 3 years ago at a game in Cairo, GA. He was coming down out of the Coaching Box, and I was able to get his attention.

Go Jackets, Merry Christmas and God Bless!

That play against UNC was and is still referred to as "The Run". Winning that game put us on the track of being unbeaten for quite a while - I don't remember the exact number of games.

And we got royally screwed by the refs in that FSU game, because we did recover, possess and down one of those OSK's. One of FSU's players took it away from our player, after he was down, in full view of the ref, but they awarded it to FSU. That game also started the "Fast Break Offense" at FSU, and, I believe, Mark Richt was their OC at the time, with Charlie Ward as QB.

Edit: That FSU game was the rise of FSU and the beginning of a downward trend for GT - at least for a period of time.

Go Jackets, Merry Christmas and God Bless!

Jones is still coaching in Tville, but he's at the private college there, Thomas University. They're starting up a football team that will be made up of veterans, guys who have been in the service or are in the service.
The OC is former Tech assistant Buzz Preston, who coached WRs under PJ.

Thanks for the update on Shawn.

One of the greatest QB's in the annals of GT football history.

A playmaker who could always be counted to make plays for his team.

Congratulations Shawn, you are deserving of this accolade!
