Should\'ve never lost this game

I'm still in shock. The defense that played brilliantly COLLAPSED! in the 4th qtr. How does that happen? We threw this game away.

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

gnats, the problem was we couldn't block anybody and we couldn't give the defense any breathers.

and i didn't start this thread. weird ubb **** I guess. I was responding to a thread. maybe want to check that out?

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

Very disappointing collapse by the D in the 4th quarter. When they should have been sky high and flying around we couldn't get any pressure on Rix in the end but more disappointing we couldn't contain him on the run. Wasted effort.

As for the offense, Reggie looked great in the 1st half but showed freshman jitters in the second half. HEY COACH, WHERE'S THE DUMP OFF ON THE BLITZ. WHERE'S THE QUICK SLANT. WHERE'S THE SAFETY VALVE IN THE FLATS. GIVE THE LITTLE MAN A CHANCE.

In retrospect, game was lost on the 1st and goal at the 1 where we didn't score. Went to the short yardage offense and played right into their hands. We were doing great. Ah what could have been.

Nevertheless, this team is for real, what a great effort. We just lack a little bit believing in ourselves... We need to kick Clemson's but Saturday....

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

on the goaline series we should have run Bilbo for the QB sneak rather than Ball. Bilbo is huge he would get in.

i though bilbo was too good to leave off the field, he is gettin crap worth of time. should have let him transfer if your not gonna play him.

any way good job in first half coaching.

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

Although we should have scored a touchdown instead of a field goal on our first field goal, it was the inability of the defensive coach to adjust to the short pass underneath that beat us in the 4th quarter.

We had enough points in the 4th quarter to win if we would have taken away the underneath passes. It is the same story as last year and the BYU game this year, Tenuta can defend as long as the opposition does not open up on the passing routes.

You can take it to the bank as a sure bet, any team that abandons the run and starts the underneath passing will beat us.

We weren't playing South Carolina, you know. FSU has a history of National Championships and Conference domination. They didn't get there by losing to over-achieving, undermanned, running-on-guts, a-year-or-two-away teams.

I'm proud as I can be of our team and coaches, we're not backing up to anybody! You can bet Bobby Bowden sees the handwriting on the wall, and it says Mene Mene Tekel Gailey !

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

Ahso, I agree with your assessment. Before long, teams will BEGIN the game with passes. Why not? We wear ourselves out trying to defend. They will use the pass to set up the run! We do not have enough guys to cover both. FSU, on D, looks like they have 15 players.

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

GREAT POST Belly! I went to the game, and for our boys to do what they did against a VERY talented, and VERY deep FSU team against one of the LOUDEST crowds Bowden said he's ever heard was something else. We scored the first touchdown of the year on their vaunted defense and we nearly came away with a win, even after their thug defense tried to wipe away half our roster.

We WILL get them soon!

GOO JACKETS!! GREAT GAME!!! HANG YOUR HEADS HIGH!!!

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

Great effort and the Clemson game is still huge in terms of what it means to the program. Validating the last 2 games against an average at best CU bunch is critical. Not doing so negates a lot of our hard earned momentum.

One of our biggest problems on D last night in second half was poor tackling and loose deep route cover from the corner opposite Rueben. I'd really like to see Davis and/or Scott get some PT there. THWG

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

asho, I think you're totally wrong. It was the medium range passes that killed us. Sure, FSU hit a few underneath routes, but we were giving those to them due to their speed. You simply can't shut everything down unless you're sitting on the QB. What killed us were the two longer throws, one on each of their TD drives.

This "inability to adjust" mantra is crap. The fact is you have to give a team like FSU something. We decided to stop the run and the deep ball. If we could have limited them to the short passes we would have won.

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

Sorry ahso, all I can say is the rest of the football world thinks Tenuta is a pretty damn good D coordinator. We can't play man up tight coverage on FSU, we don't have the speed. Everything else you said doesn't matter after that. You not only have to tailor your strategy to what the other team does, you have to tailor it to what your team can do. IMO Tenuta did a great job of that last night.

BTW FSU was 3-11 on third down, that's a .273%. Horrible on 3rd down? When the detailed play by play is available I suggest you take a look. FSU completed at 3 passes over 20 yds in the 2nd half. That's what got them in scoring position.

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

I'm one of the LAST to say this but-THIS WAS A GOOD LOSS.What effort and heart. We probably should have never been in this but we were to the end.Sure mistakes were made but this ain't the Citadel, folks. This FSU on SAT NITE?
CG has made lemonade out of lemons.

Re: Should\'ve never lost this game

NCJacket, I think you are totally wrong, just like you think I am totally wrong.

Football games are won just as any other sport, and it is called strategy. We had stopped their efforts in the first half by attacking their running game. There is nothing wrong with that, because we knew they would try to establish the runing game with Jones. The strategy was successful.

Now, it should have been known by any good defensive coach, FSU would not pursue the same strategy and would change their strategy for the second half. It was evident from all of last year and the BYU game, Tenuta is vulnerable for the short to intermediate passes underneath the coeverage.

If you are a good defensive coach, you immediately play tight on the receivers and backs out of the backfield for the short to medium passes. It is called adapting and gambling. As you said, you have to give up something.

We should have known their strategy by our past weakness. We should have given up the run for defense against the short and medium passes immediately after the half. When we do this, they will then change their strategy again, and so will we.

The problem is Tenuta never changes his strategy and "ALWAYS" gives up the short and medium passes. So his inability to adapt cost us this game, the BYU game, and many games last year.

I really don't care whether you agree with me or not, I know I am right and you are wrong.

When I make a statement, I want it examined as closely as it can possibly be examined. I want you to pay very, very, very, very close attention the rest of the season. Any time the opposition decides to abandon the run and attack us with the short and medium passes underneath our soft coverage, we will be beaten.

Don't take my word for it. As Brian Dennehey said in Silverado, "hide and watch". Tenuta cannot and will not adapt to this type of offense.

We are still horrible on third-and-long. It has nothing to do with depth. Our defense was extremely fresh for the second half. We had the ball for 23 out of the 30 minutes for the first half. Had we adapted to the expected in the second half, I am sure we would have had our share of the time in the second half.

He will be the downfall of Gailey.

This still does not take away from the effort by the team, Gailey, and Tenuta's defense against the run.
