is now only a couple of days away, it is time to get focused on the game at hand. This kind of game always puts a bit of scare in my heart. As a football program, IMO, we have very little to gain but a great deal to lose by playing Utah. I mean no disrespect to Utah, but we have no business playing them. Go out and win as we should and we head into 2006 with 8 wins and a better outlook. Go out their and lose as we did in the Silicon Bowl, and the issues become murky once again.

GT needs to dominate this game and put it away EARLY. I do not want to be pessimistic, but if we go out and lay an egg then the preverbial S*** needs to hit thte fan.

I beelieve we win and win big. I just hope our SA's go out there and wrap this thing up early and give the back-ups some needed playing time.

"We have no business playing them..." I know your intent was good but adding sentences like that does nothing but
1) put pressure on our team to win convincingly or
2) remind the team to not get up for the game.

I like your posts and am not meaning to attack you. But, we're playing a team that went to the BCS just last year and who kicked their opponent all over the field. It is silly to say anything except we'll be in for a tough game.

We will be in for a tough game.

Midatlanta I was not intending to down the bowl or our opponent. I am just still pissed that we got screwed out of a closer bowl.

Utah could pose problems for us I ahve no doubt about that whatsoever. They did do well last year in the Fiesta Bowl, but remeber who they played and the talent level they had at that time. They were much better then than they are now.

GO Tech!!! BUST THEIR ASSES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have lost 2 of last 3. One of those was a must win, yet the coach still got an extension. This is about as big a "must" game for a minor bowl that we have ever had.

It seems that every game is a big game/must win game/etc. these days in college football. The parity has driven it to that.

That being said...there is nothing for us to gain from winning this game...but everything to lose. For Utah...it is just the opposite. It is much tougher to play it from the perspective we are having to take.

Here's what we play for:
1) Our Seniors have been as steadying a group of seniors as any. They have the opportunity to continue to send the program forward (and I think they will).
2) The seniors have an opportunity to win 8 games for the first time.
3) We have the real chance of moving into the Top 20 or even the Top 15 with a big win. (Clemson can be jumped after their game yesterday).
4) We still have plenty of youngsters who probably are looking forward to any trip, particularly one to San Fran. I think they're hungry enough to want it.

I don't discount that a Utah type team can be excited about playing us, but we can take care of business too with proper attention to detail.

Okay, I'll bite. Just what makes this a must win, and what will chnage if we do win or if we lose?

I want us to win every game we play. And as noted there is a lot for us to play for, particularly sending the seniors out on a high note and building for next year.

But if we win, nothing will change. The people who don't like Chan still won't. Those who do will be louder. If we lose, just switch that around. So what am I missing? What makes this a must win game?

CCG put it best himself:

"I'm telling them that if we win this, maybe we creep into the Top 20 for the first time in quite a few years. If you're post-season Top 20, maybe you're pre-season Top 20. We've got Notre Dame walking in here the first ball game of next year. You win that one, now you're set to go take the steps toward the Top 10, which is what we're trying to get done around here. But it all starts with THIS GAME! You gotta go win this ball game. So I'm trying to get them to understand the magnitude of this game."

I say he feels that it's a must win game for us moving forward. How's that for Chan striving for Mediocrity?

this is a VERY big game in terms of "winning the ones we should". If we keep doing that, we'll keep moving forward. and dropping less and less to the likes of NCSU and the dandies up there in virginia. Win the ones we should, and split the ones we "shouldn't" and we're sitting pretty for years to come.

Houser,

Did you take that off the Coach's show or has he said it in an article too? I saw him say it on the show and was impressed and it sounds like the guys are getting the message.

BTW, folks over here are mighty proud of D'bo getting his degree from GT - hopefully that translates into a few more pickups from the Magnolia State!

THAT'S what we have to do year in and year out to be a top program again!

Good perspectives from you all on the game. I agree, it's a big statement game for the program. What I hope to see is what Corso talked about last year, playing against the way the game is supposed to be played, not the opponent.

It's from the 12/24 "GT Sports Today" show with Wes Durham. I took it off the Wreck Wramblin site.

"Must" win games are really only determined by the AD, and Braine has already acted so that no game is a "must" win for Chan for a season or more.
However, this is a really important game. 8-4 would be Gailey's finest season. Top 20 would be a huge accomplishment. A win would make this team at least the 4th best in this nine year run of bowl teams. It would be three straight bowl wins.
A loss and 7-5 and this team looks like every other Gailey team so far, just a notch above .500, a poor finish, no sense of building momentum.
I know I'll feel very differently about the '05 squad based on their "final exam" against the Utes.

Exactly!!!

Without climbing back on my /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/soapbox.gif too long, this is where Tech needs to be recruiting from. There are plenty of excellent high school football players around the country that have also done their work in the classroom.
I want Ga. Tech to spend the money and effort to put together a national public relations campaign to attract the student athletes that want a national championship ring as well as a world renowned degree from Tech.

As soon as tomorrow's game is over, I believe Ga. Tech can pay it's recently graduated football players to be spokesmen for this effort.

Tech is a tough school, but so what? I am tired of trying to recruit around our academic tradition. We have something very few can offer: Big time football and one of the most respected degrees in the business.

Who can tell me that guys like E Henderson, D Bilbo, C Reis, G Wilkonson, etc. would not be respected by the kids we want?
I was so proud of Bilbo and Henderson for what they said at graduation.

I think that a lot of people will re-evaluate their position if this were to take place. But, I don't think this is quite the same team that Gailey took to the Silicon Valley Bowl in his first year.

The only thing one has to imagine is if we lose this game (especially if O and ST suck) we will have lost 3 of last 4, still gave the coach a 5 year extension, will have all recruiting opponents say UM was a fluke, will underscore choke vs ugag.

Not sure how much more you want.

Or win and say we won 5 of the last 7. We'll see tomorrow.

I hear you midatlantech...but those are more reasons that fans like to win games rather than players (i.e. 8 wins, move into Top 20 from #24, etc.). They tend to look at the game from a much higher level.

Anyway...all of the reasons you give are ones the coaches will be playing up....including pumping up the younger kids by telling them a win could put us in the preseason top 25 next year and give us a better chance at a big bowl next year.

They will also play the Music City/Meineke did us wrong card..and the ACC pride card since Clemson and BC have already won their games.

Bottom line is they have to dig deep within to get fired up...particularly defensively...or we will get beat. My only point is that it will be harder for our guys to get fired up than Utah because if we win everyone will say we should have...Utah is seen as the big underdog.

I agree.

Just a thought: maybe being 2000+ miles away without many fans will help the "us against them" angle.

I would use the "Inner Circle" reference, but that sounds a bit too Irish. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugher.gif
