SI's post spring top 25

VT at 5??? Really???

I have no inside knowledge, but I'll be damned if those guys arent ranked top 10 preseason and fall on their face at some point. Don't get me wrong, they are always a sound, good team, but 5???

So, even if I look at our season objectively, and I concede that we were thoroughly waxed in the chicken sandwich bowl, nothing that I saw last year from VT would make me believe that they were the 5th best team in the nation.

But, it's SI. Didn't they predict that we'd win 3 games last season? They sure are good at their jobs...

A couple reasons come to mind. First is that there probably is a bit of a lack of dead on top 5/10 teams. A lot of the top 10 teams from last year lost a lot of people to graduation/NFL.

I mean look at the top 10 from the final BCS standings.
Bama, Utah, Texas Tech, Boise St and Ohio state aren't expected to be as top class as they were the previous year.

The up and coming teams (Ole Miss, Ok St, and in SI's opinion Oregon) are not really proven enough to be considered top 5.

Another reason is maybe they wanted a high ranked ACC team. Especially since this ACC team plays Bama first day so maybe they just giving VT some cushion.

Final reason is they are probably, if just a little bit, on the Tyrod Taylor koolaid.

Then again, when has the ranking system ever tried to make team rankings make sense relative to each other. In truth we might be just a little less good than VT but that won't stop them from placing them 10 ranks higher.

Let's see... VT way overrated. Oklahoma State overrated. TCU overrated, Boise overrated, Oregon overrated.

GT underrated, LSU underrated, Penn State underrated, FSU underrated, North Carolina underrated.

I can live with a preseason ranking of top 15. Even if we have a similar season as last year we'd still end up ranked very well, and probably never be unranked.

I'm surprised UNC isn't on that list. And I agree that VT has no business being rated that high.

Anyone want to take bets on how badly VT is going to be blown out by Alabama to start the season? It seems to be becoming a tradition. Last year it was Clemson having the honors, then the year before that it was VT being schooled by LSU.

Maybe not this time. Bama will have a new QB, VT Defense is usually tough, we shall see.

I do not see VT getting blown out by Alabama. Clemson was a poorly coached team IMO. During the Bowden era they were very up and down. But, I do not recall the last time a Beamer-coached team was truly blown out. There may be one or so, but I doubt it w/ AL returning only a few offensive starters (but w/ Colin Peek;)).

It is pretty interesting when you look at the write-up by SI. It's clear they have done nothing more than lip-service to research when they list Lucas Clock (whom I love) as a key returning starter and do not mention someone like Derrick Morgan. This kind of write-up just reminds me of why these articles are so pointless. I imagine the writer's research consisted of the first five pop-ups on a google search for "2010 top 25 ncaa f-ball"

LSU 07... 45-7

That poll puts a lot of pressure on Skip Holtz and East Carolina with a #17, particularly since their four non-conference games are at West Virginia, at UNC, home against Virginia Tech, and Appalachian State. But, it is good PR for their program.

VT will beat Alabama.

I hope you are right because it will mean a lot for the resurgence of the ACC. BUT, I just don't have that kind of belief in Taylor.

The ACC is lacking and has been lacking good quarterbacks. I think the trend continues; Taylor can't get it done to start the season against Bama.

I actually do think VT has a pretty good shot to beat Bama, but in my opinion neither team is a top ten team.
