Some positive notes

Amidst all of the bitching and complaining, I wanted to point out that we tried a new pass play last night, and it was one of the only things that worked. Since our OL is so incompetent as pass blocking, we did at least 3 A-back screens that I have never seen before, with some good success. One was on 3rd and 12(?) on the last drive before the shove.

In watching the replay, I also noticed that we had open WR's on almost every dropback, but JT barely had time to even throw, much less check down to an open guy in the flat or across the middle. Stewart and Jeune have showed good hands, if we can just figure out how to give them some time.

We also had some good option runs when we got our blocks. There is potential in this team, we just have to become more consistent. The defense played reasonably well last night despite no help from the offense, which is a reassuring sign for the future. We have been right there at the end in games where our offense was bad, something I never thought I would see.

The season has been in the tank for a while now, so I'm just trying to look for any positives that we can find. I still think CPJ is the best man for the job, but that doesn't mean we can't or shouldn't make changes or look for ways to improve. I hope the staff and administration has some productive conversations in the offseason about the future of GT football, because I still think we can find ways to build on the sporadic great seasons we have had.

I love how someone posts a positive note thread after every loss as if we haven't had one after every loss.

I salute your glass half full approach!

Yeah, Willis is a real silver lining. I think we used to run a similar play with Godhigh. It takes a guy who can hold a block and sell it, then catch behind himself.

D played great. The lack of a pass rush is bad, but tough to argue with the overall production or the effort. They could have packed it in at any number of points but they didn't.

There weren't as many people clogging up the stadium.

Well I'm trying to make it specific, rather than just being like "yep, we suck but we'll get em next year!"

Every time we have a sluggish offensive performance, we always run some play that gets everyone excited. ND it was the BB slant to the outside where Skov scored. Now against VT it was the AB route after he blocks for 1-2 seconds.

My question is: why do we not run more of these when we don't have our backs against the wall? I know CPJ has plays up his sleeve. But he pulls stuff out when our bread and butter has been shut down for 3 quarters.

IIRC, the Skov play only worked when ND went prevent at the end. The AB route worked throughout the game for us and was in direct response to VT LB's ignoring the AB when they went out for routes. PJ clearly just instructed them to break off their routes quickly because they wouldn't have time to actually run a route downfield without JT getting destroyed.

I also noticed those screen passes that, not surprisingly, worked well. It's like Johnson read my suggestions and agreed with 'em. If we see a shotgun formation the next 2 games, I know he'll have read 'em.

baby steps, I suppose.

To be fair, it's not like we haven't tried them before. We ran screens against Clemson with some success, but Marshall blew a key play where he ran right behind the defense. JT also threw a pick against FSU attempting to throw a screen pass. I noticed he threw one of the screens to Willis last night very high to get over the defender, and Willis did a great job getting quick separation.

Marcus Allen, with the exception of the fumble, played well.

Well, the fumble, the dropped first down pass, and getting hurt again (although he did return).

Speaking of B-back play, is Marshall hurt or in the dog house? It was bizarre, with all the other young guys starting, to play Allen almost exclusively when he hasn't had many reps this year.

Skov remains an enigma. When I first saw him in, I said "we must be passing here, Skov is in." Sure enough, we drop back to pass. Skov goes right and has nobody to block. Two blitzers come from the left and disrupt the play. I don't know how that's supposed to work, but that's probably not how it was drawn up.

Yeah, I've noticed that a lot this year. Our backs have no idea who to block, which probably makes our already terrible pass blocking OL look much worse.

I got to sit in a suite last night ...free food and beer!

...look at me damnit!

I recall MM getting some touches last night but he wasn't able to get through the LOS like Allen was able to do.

the only thing really new and different was Mitchell int/TD
the rest was pretty much waiting for the inevitable to happen (like all season except for fsu)
