Special Teams

Lemme get this straight ... in camp, Rodwell is at around 3 of 4 or 4 or 5, good punts to "not good" AND CPJ hasn't decided on who the returner is going to be, stating "there's a myriad of choices" ... this earns a headline about ST concerns? Really?

What game did we shank a punt that pretty much led to a score for the other team and led to a loss? Pitt? I kinda remember a damn shank.

Miami. We were like on our own 25 and it didn't make it across midfield.

You're probably thinking of UNC game though. We were up 21-7 with about a minute left in the first half. Shanked a punt and they scored before halftime to make it 21-14.

+1 to this. Here's an article/video about a high school in Arkansas that didn't punt. Hard to say if the HS game is an analog to the college game in terms of not punting but something I hope our coaching staff has considered: https://fivethirtyeight.com/features/the-high-school-football-coach-who-never-punts/

I've read about this guy before. Part of the logic behind his no-punt philosophy is the lack of dependability in the HS punt game. Higher probability for bad snaps and shanked punts and overall shorter punts on average - not even factoring in returns. So he's facing the prospect of going for it on 4th and 6 from his own 40 knowing that even if he punts he's probably only going to net 20-some odd yards on a punt on average. So why not go for it. I don't have the numbers, but I imagine the average D1 P5 college team has a much more dependable punt game which would change the math quite a bit.

I do remember a story about one of their games against a team ranked way above them that had superior talent and he knew it. Think they scored on the opening possession, went onsides kick, and recovered. Pattern continued and they were up something like 5 touchdowns before the other team even got a possession.

I think using the punt game is smart more often than not as long as you've got a dependable punt unit. But I also think most CFB/NFL coaches default to punt way too often. I think CPJ is smarter about it than most.

Had at least one shitty punt against ND. Also missed 2 field goals and decided to go for it on 4th-5 from the ND 32 (probably because CPJ didn't want to miss another field goal.) Was the UNC game the bad snap that led to the shitty punt. Duke returned a punt to the 1 and later returned a KO for a TD. ST was a total shit show for 3 straight games.

I would like to see us quick kick occasionally when we are 3rd and 10+ . My dad always tells me about coach Dodd doing it a lot back in the day. I'm sure Coit could also confirm this.

My old highschool used to do this. When youre in a bad situation it can really help because theres never any return, and sometimes you can get a lot of roll out of a low line drive

exactly, I just think given our low percentage on throwing when we are in a 3rd and long we would benefit in a big way from doing this on occasion and it might even help us convert a few 3rd and long plays because the D would have to play a little softer and not stack the box if we did a quick kick

Problem is you need to run it out of the shotgun.

I remember. I was drunk.

They might be able to mix a few plays in so it wouldn't always signal the quick kick or maybe have a WR go in motion or an A back go in motion getting the ball on the pitch and kicking a line drive down field. I mean I love this team and fully think we will be back in a big way this year but rodwell flat out sucked on most of his kicks last year. We don't have much to lose so we should try something until we get that stud in here with the 2017 class.

While I don't have a problem with the occasional quick kick, I can already hear the boos. Honestly though, I doubt a coach known for going for it on 4th is going to punt on 3rd. Although it would definitely fool some folks.

the day paul johnson punts on 3rd down is the day he loses my support. and I really like him.

if you have a great defense, it becomes slightly more palatable, but an offensive "genius" coach punting on 3rd down so his mediocre-at-best defense can get on the field? nope.

You'd like to see us take our highly productive offense off the field on third down, and put in our bend-but-don't-break defense, just for the off chance that the punt is better than it should have been?

I don't think you're going to get one passing down's worth of value out of that, with the current team. The defense we've got gives up too much field position when it's not creating turnovers.

yep,Dodd even kicked on 2nd down for real surprise, very few runbacks
