Any update on kicking duties? Harvin is solid at punter but need a place kicker desperately.. cost us the game vs Tennessee and forced us into going for it close a lot more than normal.(Miami)

I hope we have a kicker healthy that gets it done. Agree we've really hurt in fg and kick off last year.

I imagine Brenton King will get the job. Was 5 out of 6 last year with a long of 42. If he's healthy, I'd expect him to be solid, though he may never be a guy that can kick 50 plus yarders like Butker. The walk-on, Shawn Davis is still on the roster. Dunno about his health situation, but he was better on kickoffs last year, so maybe they both play.

We are looking to sign a PK in the next class, I believe.

Davis was improving after a terrible first game. He seemed better than King on KOs to me. I think King does have a leg though. He was battling with a groin injury last season, which really can effect your kicking. His long in HS was like 56 IIRC.

Davis missed two vs UT - then made the next two over the next few games.

King took over FG duty after Miami and went 5 for 5 until missing one against VT (finishing 5/6 for the year).

I think we are ok with King. Not too worried.

Echoing the earlier comments that the place kicking issue was that the primary guy was hurt. Assuming he's healthy, I think the place kicking will be OK.

I'm just looking for special teams to not give away points/yards. They don't have to create anything extra, just don't give away any with stuff like punting the ball a net 30 yards, allowing a KO to be returned to the 35, or attempting KO returns when starting from inside the 5 yd line (GT typically averages under 20 yard per return).

Butker was an absolute MVP. If he doesn't make that, that whole season would be remembered differently even if we still won the Orange.
And you can't expect to get a Harrison Butker more than once in a generation, if that. Generally speaking our coach is not going to send in our FG kicker (even Butker) if it is a 45 yard or more attempt. First will be the "draw them offsides" play, or a long, incomplete pass downfield or a punt.

I think CPJ got a lot more comfortable with trying long FG's in Butker's last 2 seasons, but yeah, we can't expect to have a kicker of that caliber very often.

Butker was awesome but "once a generation"?? Hardly.

There are plenty of Butkers all across college football, statistically. Guys who can make 6-8 outside of 45 yards aren't "generational" talents. We just need to recruit better. Wasn't Butker the result of CPJ deciding to pay more attention to special teams back after the end of 2012?

Butker was a sophomore when he shoved his foot up the mutts' ass. He is greatly missed but probably the easiest skill position to replace. PKs are usually a bit brighter than the other positions in football.

Brighter? Like Roberto Aquayo? Watch Kansas City this fall and then tell me Butker was not a generational talent--at least with respect to kickers at Tech. Sisson, Manget, Butker, Anybody in between? But the entire kick team has to be there as well. Kicker can't kick without blocking, snapping, holding. We have a history of not having our ducks in order.
