Well, interesting, but if you read my "what to look for" some of those items did pan out with some surprises too.
First I want to say this was strictly sweats and helmets. Everything was run slower, partly b/c they are learning partly b/c it was just 3/4 speed. I am not going to judge the OL or DL as 1) there is no hitting 2) they didn't go up against each other at all
Tough to judge really any position today so I will talk more about practice, what was going on, personel groupings and generalities.
- first and foremost, this is not taking a shot at anyone, its just flat out true, multiple people commented that they saw more coaching out of the head man today than 6 years combined with Gailey. Frankly, maybe not 6 years combined, maybe 3, but the point was there, PJ is vocal, instructive and absolutely hawks over the QBs and offense. I agreed with them. This is a good thing. Leadership and instruction coming directly from the top.
- Today was foundation day. It was vanilla, laying the basics of a triple option offense. We are talking about drills on reading the DE/DT motion and whether to hand off or go wide. Drills on when to go to the pitch man vs cut it up field. The backup offensive players stood in the positions of the defense and held bags for the linement to hit.
- There was alot of instruction from PJ thrown Josh's way today in QB read drills. There were 5-6 QBs with "fake" centers snapping the ball to them. Josh and Calvin's units were next to each other. Two coaches stood over the center and where the OT would be and acted the part of the DE and DT. This would make the QB read where to go with the handoff or keep it. Well, PJ was the faux DE for Nesbitt, Booker had an asst coach combination. I am not going to fully read into this, but if PJ wasn't severly and keenly interested in how and what josh does, he would be lined up over booker. To me, today, Josh appears will be given all the opportunities to win the spot. Yes its practice one, but we only have 14 days and PJ does NOT waste time.
- Really the only offense vs defense today was 7 on 7 style passing. G Smith was solely practicing at A-Back...and actually this looks like a good fit. He was not in the WR group all day. The passing of this offense is there, and they practiced it alot. The practiced attacking 2 deep zones and man coverage. Defense had great coverage 1-2 plays, and not so great, with one pick on a poorly thrown ball by Booker (i think).
- Wommack is a yeller, he isn't tenuta mean, but he will get on the guys quick. In fact this whole staff is vocal and demanding. BJ was in the face of the linebackers.
- On D, the starting D was as follows...Butler, Jahi, Morgan, MJ, Walker, Richard, Jefferson, Barnes, (missed the 3rd LB) Reese, Burnett
- Commented earlier that wommack likes more avg size S, you can see that with reese.
- Tony Clark is at S with 2nd team
- Offense ran deep post passing drills vs the coaches acting like defense. The WR's were running, probably not at full speed, the A-back went out in routes as well...essentially the idea here is what to look for on hitting a post pattern vs various D's. What was important about this drill is the FOCUS on down field passing. Josh hit almost every WR in the endzone, booker did miss a few...I was happy with Josh's downfield accuracy here.
- OL is really not one I can judge. I didn't see Dunmon's number out there...unless he changed it he may have not been at practice. Voss is repping at center as well. Gardner is at his familiar spot and AJ Smith was at RT. Some of the younger OL like Yandell, Gilbert were getting looks as well.
- RB's in the A-back spot are going to be asked to catch alot...
- B-back will be an interesting situation. I think...the guy who wins the starting role and bulk of the time will be the guy who is willing to run it up the gut the hardest. Not the guy who is tentative and looking to bounce it outside. Mindset change.
- Based on the early number of passes and pass drills we are doing, I see us passing more than Navy.
- Secondary received alot of coaching, alot more than in the past. Wommack working hard with the safeties and Charles Kelly flat out riding the CB's...this can only help.
- the team sprints from drill to drill, no half jogging full sprints
- Frankly there is just more urgency and intensity. When the pads come on...it will be fun.
- BJ was on top of rocker and griffin all day...
- Earls was at WR as was JJ and Bebe.
- Physically, Brad Jefferson looks like a BEAST.
- Offense was very vanilla and basic today. Just getting the team to make the right reads. All QB's had trouble with the option pitches. This will get better over time. There is no clear cut leader and NO ONE performed awesome or great or well or NO ONE can be annointed the second coming yet. Lets wait for pads. Some did good things, and followed up with as many bad things. Today was a learning day....and when you learn you make mistakes, look bad, and that is why they call it practice.
- Final comment...this offense looks fun to play for. You get to do everything, WRs run, RB's catch....I would love to play for it. I only can think recruits will see that over time too.
