Spring Scrimmage Report

Master B can't get to a computer so he asked me to write a report on the scrimmage. Here it is.

Unfortunately, there wasn't a large contingent of fans at Bobby Dodd. This was probably due to the overcast, gloomy weather. However, it was exciting to see how Reggie fared in his first scrimmage of the spring.

There was new addition to the preparations before the scrimmage as far as the Special Teams are concerned. For the field goal units, Charles Kelly had a drill where the first kick would be an Extra Point from the middle of the field, then from the left and right hashes. Once those were made, the line of scrimmage would be moved back ten yards, and the same operation was performed until the line of scrimmage reached about the 30 yard line. I like this a lot because one, it allow our kickers to get a lot of practice in with their kicks from different distances, but at the same time they are from different angles. This is a key difference in how the Special Teams has been coached in the past. Rashaun Grant was returning punts. And I must add that Durant Brooks is going to be a hell of a punter if he is consistent.

Alright, I could have done the Master B play by play deal, which i decided to do at the beginning of the scrimmage; however, as time went on, it became rather tedious, and I couldn't proceed. But I did do a little play by play. The opening part of the scrimmage came in a goaline situation. The ball was put on the 4 yard line. I like this addition also because it is so key that we learn how to get the ball in the endzone when we're so close. We've had trouble with this in years past. Not immense trouble, yet this addition will give us consistency in goaline situations. So here's the play by play.

First Team O vs. First Team D

+ Reggie Ball QB run. Gain of 3 yards.
+ Goaline stop by Jamal Lewis (nice stick)
+ Reggie throws a good ball to big Colin Peek, who makes a great snag under solid coverage, yet he doesn't manage to get a foot in.
+ 20 yard FG attempt by Travis Bell is no good. I mean this was just ridiculous. Travis i think kind of took the kick for granted, so he kicked the football so hard. I guess he got a little too carried away. That was just a fluke, because later on in the scrimmage he easily nailed a 51 yard FG.

Second Team O vs. Second Team D

+ Jamaal Evans runs for 2 yards, and they were well earned. He could have been clobbered for a loss or no gain, but Jamal is fearless, let me tell you. He is going to be a darn good one.
+ Sweep to Jamaal Evans, he goes lights out for a TD. Jamaal's vision is second to none. He is the man. Extra Point is good.

First Team O vs. First Team D

+ Reggie Ball throws a dart to TE Mike Matthews for a TD. Nice catch, mike. Extra Point splits the posts.

Second Team O vs. Second Team D

+ Jamaal Evans is clobbered for a loss of about 2.
+ Taylor Bennet to Martin Frierson, wide open in the back of the endzone, for a TD. I'm excited about Martin Frierson. He had a darn good day. Extra Point splits the uprights.

The second segment of the scrimmage had the line of scrimmage at the 30 yard line. I would like to add I am a fan of the organization of the scrimmage, because it practices all aspects of different situations. This allows the team to get practice in various situations. I also did this segment play by play.

Second Team O vs. First Team D

+ Pass to TE for a gain of 4.
+ Pass to Greg Smith for a gain of 4.
+ Jamaal Evans uses his great vision and makes a great cut to cruise his way for a 10 yard gain.
+ Complete to Martin Frierson, gain of 2.
+ Pass complete to Martin Frierson, who runs it in for a TD. Taylor Bennett did a great job of getting out of trouble and finding a receiver. Extra Point Good.

First Team O vs. Second Team D

+ David Brown is after Reggie, DB has some great quickness for a big guy, Reggie throw an erratic pass. Incomplete.
+ Choice solid run for a gain of 7.
+ False Start, loss of 5.
+ Absolutely beautiful throw, great placement, Reggie nails Calvin Johnson for a TD. Coverage by Tony Clark. This pass reminds me of our first TD against Auburn last year. Beautiful Placement, and Calvin miraculously does the rest. Nice. Extra Point Good.

Second Team O vs. First Team D

+ Sweep to Jamaal Evans. He breaks two tackles and makes a solid gain of 4. For a small RB, Jamaal is fearless and strong.
+ Pass complete to Greg Smith for a gain to 8.
+ Complete to big TE Colin Peek for a gain of 8.
+ Nice tackle for a loss by Jamal Lewis.
+ Complete to #36 WR, gain of 5.
+ Complete to #36 WR TD. Extra Point good.

First Team O vs. Second Team D

+ Incomplete intended for Calvin.
+ Tackle for a loss of three by big Marcus Harris.
+ Great Protection for Reggie who has plenty of time, but throws it right to the defender who drops the Pick.
+ a 51 yard attempt for Travis Bell, who doesn't have a reputation for a strong leg. Easily enough distance, and unless the Officials were lying, the FG was good. Nice.

Second Team O vs. First Team D

+ Rashuan Grant gain of 1.
+ Rashaun Grant gain of 3.
+ Screen to Martin Frierson, who catches and eludes numerous defenders and gains 12 yards. Nice.
+ Rashaun Grant gain of 2.
+ Rashaun Grant loss of 1.
+ Great Pass, solid coverage, complete to Martin Frierson for an 11 yard TD. Martin Frierson gets most valuble reciever of the day by a long shot. I believe he finished with 3 TDs. Nice. He made consistent plays all over the field today.

First Team O vs. Second Team D

+ Reggie ball throws a dart that is read directly by Tony Clark. Clark picks it and runs it back about 10 yards. Tony Clark has a promising future as a DB, and we'll need him this year especially with our thinness due to constant injuries.

Second Team O vs. First Team D

+ All my notes say is TD to Greg Smith.

The third and final segment of the scrimmage had the Offense now starting at their own 30 yard line. (70 yards to the endzone)

This is where I stopped the play by play. Jamaal Evans continued to run the ball very well and he ran in the final TD of the scrimmage. He had a wonderful day. Greg Smith and Martin Frierson both had great days. I think Taylor Bennett played overall better than Reggie, but that may be expected due to Reggie's nagging injury. Overall, a solid performance by the offenses. The first team offensive line is going to be strong, in my opinion. Another part of this offense that continues to impress me is the utilization of tight ends. On numerous occasions the tight ends were key not only for blocking, but also in the passing game. Although not a large crowd and a gloomy day, it was a heap of fun. Go Jackets. To Hell With Georgia.

Thanks for the great report Dbo!

Grant at PR could be a munster if he can hang on to the pill. Sounds good. I also want to see the young man get some carries out of the backfield. Talent. This guy is special.

GO JACKETS!!!

Thanks for the report: I'm surprised the weather didn't cancel or delay the practice of Wednesday or today.....the days that I had planned on going. I'm sure a lot of people had the same thoughts I did. Heck Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. the hail was so thick on I-75 below Calhoun I'd a swore they'd cancel that 4 PM. practice. In fact a plane went down in it with a pilot of 'the Right Stuff' fame. Radar showed rain heading toward Atlanta today and guys on campus was saying it was pouring on campus this morning. I guess you never know.....

Yeah we're having bad/strange weather.

Heard about the ACE. First man to break M2? I think. Topped off in a small plane ditch in N. Ga. All Hail!

GO JACKETS!!!
