Just a few offensive categories and how GT stacks up. (Data from ESPN web site)

TEAM
Rushing: 48th (156.2 per game)
Passing: 89th (189.5)
Yards per game: 81st (351.7)
Scoring: 99th (19.3)

INDIVIDUAL
Rushing yards, PJD 57th (821)
Passing yards, RB 74th (1,097)
TD passes, RB 84th (10)
Completion percentage, RB (not in top 100)
QB rating, RB (not in top 100)
Receiving yards, CJ 41st (869)
Receptions, CJ 64th (52)
TD receptions, CJ 52nd (6)

I did not set out to post negatively regarding the offense, I was just curious as to how these numbers looked. I did not find defensive numbers from ESPN, stats I am equally interested in seeing.

Offensively, scoring pops out at me ...not good at all. What is most noticeable to me is not the QB numbers, but the receiving numbers. A receiver with the talent of CJ should rank higher in all three categories, particularly receptions. Utilize the talent and get the ball to him. I want to re-check the TD numbers ...cannot believe CJ only has 6.

If you didn't know this team you may be able to look at the receiving numbers and not know where the fault lies.

But,...good golly!
In this case, the poor receiving numbers are qb stats.

Chan Gailey and staff have to do something major to take advantage of, and to reward CJ in most likely his last year at Tech.

The best defense Calvin has faced the last two years is the Tech offense.

Found defensive numbers on the NCAA web site.

Rush defense: 12th (98.0 yards per game)
Pass defense: 35th (198.4)
Total defense: 12th (296.4)
Scoring defense: 18th (18.5 points per game)

Sacks: 13th (3.1 per game)
Pass interceptions: 6th (19)
Turnovers: 16th (26)
3rd down conversions: 4th (27.9%) outstanding

Penalties: 85th (7.6 per game) [This must represent both off. & def.]
Punt return yardage: 56th (8.9 yards per return)
Kickoff yardage: 105th (24.0) awful

Great defensive numbers followed by bad special teams numbers ...special team mistakes just kill you. This absolutely must be addressed.

Another thing that apparantly needs to be addressed are penalties. Untimely penalties hurt GT dearly last night. This portrays a certain lack of discipline and needs to be corrected.

While you are looking up stats look at this site:

http://theacc.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/stats/2005-2006/confldrs.html

This compares everyone in the ACC on basically the same playing field. New stats for this weekend won't come out until Thursday coming up.

Just some notes. Ball is 4th in ACC in total offense. Ball runs a lot for a QB and is 2nd there at the moment. PJ Daniels is 4th in rushing. Calvin Johnson was leading in receivng yards per game before the UGA game. We are 3rd in rushing as a team. Tech is also 2nd or 3rd in time of possession.
However, we are dead last in red zone offense scoring even before the UGA game.
On the defensive side there are also some individuals well up there. Eric Henderson leads in fumbles forced and that with some games missed. He is also 7th in sacks. KaMichael Hall is 6th in tackles for loss.
Tech has also given up the fewest sacks this year; they are 3rd in opponents 3rd down conversion, 3rd in first downs given up, 3rd in sacks, 3rd in net punting, and 1st in turnover margin.
The most important statistic. Please note the rankings in scoring for offense and then look at points given up on defense. Tech is 5th in points given up. Tech and the 4 teams ahead of them are all ranked in the top 25. FSU is 1st in total offense yards and 2nd in points per game at 31.9. The're not even in the top 25 now.
Maybe having a defense first does mean something.

I check the stats on acc.com often and you are right, I like the comparisons they do regarding the conference.

RB does run a lot for a QB, so it stands to reason that passing numbers will be down. Still, his completion percentage and ranking are not even in the top 100 nationally. That's pretty weak.

I still believe that if you have a talent like CJ, he needs the ball more and his numbers should reflect that at the national level.

Finally, the story can be told by looking at GT's defensive numbers and then looking at where scoring ranks nationally ...99th. With a little more consistency on offence GT is probably sitting at 9-2 right now instead of 7-4 ...the difference in a good year and a great year IMO.

I agree with the title of your post. Most of those numbers are quite offensive.
