Still shaking my head at this one...

someone tell me again how this happened and how it won't occur again... and none of the "they didn't want to be there" stuff. Like Utah did? Is that the excuse for all blowouts? They didn't want to be in Blacksburg either?

I truly don't and didn't understand this game. They were without their top qb and receiver, too. Bring on ND so we can shake this last loss!!!

First of all, that's a bad link.

Second, you must really have a strange life if all you can do in February is agonize over something that happened months ago. Last year is over.

I still don't understand why we thought Utah was a chump when they were BCS the year before. I kinda sorta understand but not really. We got beat. I think it's safe to surmise that Utah is D1. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pat.gif

Most of our collective angst is because we got our a$$es handed to us. Just embarrassing!! If we had played up to our abilities we would have won - without a doubt!! Would have been close but we would have won.

Seems like the team's problem is being seen some here - no fire in the belly. Sad.

Long and short - we got our a$$es handed to us because we didn't give it our all. Coaches and players!!

I hear ya!

Personally, I'm still livid over the Peach Bowl blowout loss to Purdue in '78. I'm not here to blast players, but Mike Kelly and co. obviously didn't want to be there!

P W the one that got me was the Gator in '61 when the two Billy's from Gainesville did not want to be there I guess and were blown out by Pa pa Joe and Penn State.

Thanks!
I will add this to my list of "Why I can't focus on the upcoming schedule" issues.
At this rate, my grandson will be the one to deal with 2006.

You must\'ve meant Rip Engle, not Joe Pa.

Joe Pa's 1st team was 1966 and came to Grant Field to face Bobby Dodd's last team. PSU never crossed the 50 yardline. Tech won 21-0, IIRC. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/drink1.gif

Re: You must\'ve meant Rip Engle, not Joe Pa.

You're right AB it was Engle in 61.

Re: You must\'ve meant Rip Engle, not Joe Pa.

I agree on the '78 Peach. Don't know how we could have let Purdue trash us like that. Simply embarrassing? Sure glad we got rid of the Rodgers guy. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/pat.gif

Re: You must\'ve meant Rip Engle, not Joe Pa.

GeeTee,
Don't you agree it's simply unhealthy to grind the past? All of us remember the pain of the nut bowl, and I have to believe that CG and co. do too.

I am optimistic about the future though. With the staff changes, and the possibility that Chan is breaking up the offense, we may be getting what many have hoped for, whether we like it or not.
Tenuta re-upping is another good sign.

I am looking forward to spring ball like I haven't for several years.

Just try to get on board for a while. I am sure there will be at least a loss or two next year. Can't you wait until then to notice the spot on the tie?

Re: You must\'ve meant Rip Engle, not Joe Pa.

With our current impasse and not so stellar recruiting year, '06 year will be interesting. Not expecting much!

We don't expect much out of you either. Just Tech bashing.

Re: You must\'ve meant Rip Engle, not Joe Pa.

disagree... I think we'll have a decent team this year (similar record to this year..what we're used to), although with not too much depth. After this year, CJ will bolt, depth problems becomes a bigger issue, then recruiting woes will start to have their impact. Enjoy '06 because after that, Gailey has us a on a slippery slope.

Re: You must\'ve meant Rip Engle, not Joe Pa.

You're an idiot. We've got recruiting woes every year.
Half of the people that end their careers as Tech greats are low star recruits out of high school. Wheeler, Reis, were 2 stars i think.......oh yeah we do have Calvin....but homeless people can win the lottery too.

You make no sense with some of your posts........I bet you just sit at home and IM your buddies your recruiting websites.......lace up and play.

2, 3, 4, 1/4 stars should only count on Star Search....you probably have old re-run tapes of it.

Until then, i'll wait and see who leaves it all on the flats

Re: You must\'ve meant Rip Engle, not Joe Pa.

DWR, Wheeler and Reis were both 3 stars. I like the stars. I think that the star rating shows how much of an impact that player is going to make right away. I think the difference between a 2 star and a 5 star is the impact they are going to make right away. Calvin was a high rated 4 star and you saw the impact he had for our team. The stars do mean something, you would be crazy to say they didnt. If you dont think they mean anything, then would you take our recruiting class this year or would you take a recruiting class full of 4 and 5 stars like Texas or SC?

hehehe....this is the refrain, year after year....

yadayadayada, we haven't improved much, record wise, but we dang sure ain't slipped to the depths predicted by the vocal negatories year in and year out.

Well, we really did this year. Lower numbers pushed us down in the rankings beyond the top 50 and another year of infractions/scholarship reductions will come again...further hurting depth. Worst ranking this year than we've had in a long time (I know rankings don't matter...but it is just one measuring stick of incoming talent). Mostly average players and low numbers (due to NCAA violations) is going to cause depth problems and further hurt our program. You can pretend to think otherwise.

Re: You must\'ve meant Rip Engle, not Joe Pa.

I didn't say that they flat out don't mean anything....I said that they don't mean anything until they walk on the field and play the game. That's how crazy it is....Reis and Wheeler may have been 3 stars on one site and a 2 on another (which they were according to a couple members on this site)

Right now....I don't care who has the #1 class or who has the #53 class.....because none of these kids have walked out there and put the pads on in D1 football.

I've seen plenty of 4 stars not pan out.

Half of these kids won't play because they can't get in or stay in college.

For god's sake, UGA has a freakin TripleA football team because half of the people that they recruit can't spell their f'n name on the SAT

Re: You must\'ve meant Rip Engle, not Joe Pa.

just want to point out a couple of things

we were ranked low not because we didn't have good recruits, but because we didn't take that many recruits. The almighty rankings are based on bulk. Grabbing a bunch of average players will boost your ranking above a team that gets a couple of impact, game changing players. The issue of our recruiting is being addressed with the new coaches and new guy heading up recruiting.

We lost the bowl becaus it was clear the guys didn't want to be there. You could see it when they walked on the field. Simple as that. When you come out flat, you get stomped, nothing new and not the end of the world either.

As far a being a contender this year let see:

Miami has been is a whirl wind since LSU smacked them around and everyone lost their job. Lost some keys guys

VT, lost starting QB, RBs, 4OL, 4 key guys on D.

UVA, good number of seniors, coaches leaving left and right

UNC, lot of seniors on last year's team

As for GT
-one of top teams as far as returning starters is concerned, especially in our division
-favorable conference schedule this year
-OL, which was a weakness last year comes back with a last experience and a offseason weight training, could become a positive for us and major key to improving our offense
-D, we lose our safeties which should improve our pass coverage. These guys where great tacklers, but couldn't cover my grandma. Our corners had to play with alot of cushion as result. will be able to cover tighter this season with addition secondary speed and agility.

Maybe its just me ,but CJ seemed to have an off year last year. I know the playing calling is lack luster and Ball is well Ball, but CJ just seemed to drop a number of catches, miss a number of routes or just quit on some routes. Usual Soph. slump. Likely last year at Tech, look for much better effort to help his NFL stock.

-It will again come down to R. Ball, since no other QB will likely get a chance till he's gone. IMO, the only thing holding us back from being favorites in the Coastol going into this season is Ball. If he can improve and put up average QB numbers, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be a major contender this year. Nix is getting more control to call plays. Special teams should be improved with the new coach resulting in better field position for our offense. Choice has that extra quickness that PJ lacked and should do very well behind a solid OL. I said it since last spring 2006 will be our year. Mark it down.
