Matthews is the son of former NFL linebacker Clay Matthews, who played 19 seasons in the league, and his uncle is former NFL offensive lineman Bruce Matthews, another 19-year veteran who holds the NFL record for most games played by a non-kicker. His grandfather is Clay Matthews, Sr., the former Georgia Tech All-American who is in the Yellow Jackets' Hall of Fame. Clay Matthews III, his brother, is currently a sophomore linebacker at his father and uncle's alma mater, USC.
