I am surprised I haven't seen any discussion of this but maybe I am just thinking about it all wrong.

When the Steelers had the ball inside their own 1 yard line in the 4th quarter I was definitely thinking they should take a safety if they didn't move it out away from the goal. Forget the penalty on 3rd down which caused a safety anyway.

If I had been Tomlin and had 4th and 10 from my own 1/2 yard line leading 20-14 I would have taken a safety right there rather than risk a punt block and TD. It makes the score 20-16, the Cards still need a TD to win the game. You then get a free punt from the 20 rather than a pressured punt from the end zone. I'm thinking this gives you 30+ yards of field position to make them get the TD against a tough Steeler D.

the announcer brought it up too, during the game, right before the penalty play.

LOL, I never heard that and kept wondering why Madden or Michaels didn't mention it. Maybe it was the wing sauce

Madden was too busy trying not to repeat "Big Strong Hands", "He was nervous last time", "Super Super Super Great" or any other thing that he kept harping on over and over.

yes, and he was still discussing the replay that showed how Fitz got free if they ran the back into the flat one more time

Michaels tried to slip it in, and it was more of a question like "do you give them the safety maybe?" and John didnt hear, he was talking about how the Cardinals should try to score more points if they wanted to win, that they need to score some more points, in order to be ahead at the end, they just need some points

So yes, they might have wanted to take the safety if they didn't get out of there, but the penalty was a killer since they had gotten the first down.

It was brought up. The tricky thing is the safety made it a 3 point lead (vs. 1 point lead) after a TD. Which means that you either go to OT or win, instead of either winning or winning.

Am I missing something? the score was 20-14 and a safety made it 20-16

The subsequent TD made it 20-23 (vs. 20-21).

But if you're the Steelers with that D I doubt you're planning anything based on your opponent scoring a TD.

BWAAAHAAAAHAAAHA!!!!:laugher:

From Arizona's perspective, I was thinking "don't get a safety." Training 20-16 instead of 20-14 still meant the Cardinals needed a TD. I thought they'd be better off having Pittsburgh punt from the back of their own end zone instead of getting a free kick from the 20.

Of course this changed when the Steelers picked up a first down, but the hold in the end zone obviously negated that.

Of course the safety and subsequesnt Arizona TD gave them a 3 point lead instead of 1, so that a FG would only tie the game, not beat you --which then became a moot point anyway.

Great fourth quarter, I was pulling for Arizona but not to the point where the Steelers win upset me. I'm just glad that Hines Ward didn't catch the winning TD. I swear on that last play I looked up at the top of the screen at him and thought, "he77 no, don't let it be him." I don't like the guy --and it's not just because he went to UGA --he's an a$$.

YOU might be surprised but this is OFF TOPIC. Thanks alot for ****ting.

FWIW...Tomlin said he was going to take the safety on fourth down if they did not get a first down.

I mentioned the same thing you stated at the party I attended.
