saw on Hive a thread that had statistics for the yr and we were 118th ,near LAST,in 3rd down conversions in the NCAA-about 20%. I thought being last in KO coverage was bad (from last yr)but this KILLS you in close games.
What accounts for this?
- just poor 1st and 2nd down results
-bad O line for short yardage
-poor QB play in play-changing
-penalties that set up long conversions
-poor play calling on key down
-poor execution overall
Got more?

- Yes
- Not so much...we are good on 3 and short
- yes
- yes
-YES YES YES
- YES

Let me add one. Poor coaching in general.

Roughly two-thirds of GT's third down situations have been for eight yards or more --so you could certainly point to second down as being an area where GT needs improvement. Improvement in this area probably encompasses everything mentioned --although I don't think it's necessarily O-line play in short yardage since there has not been that many short-yardage situations, but the O-line play certainly plays a part in having so many second and long situations.

I would also consider poor play calling to be a contributor to this trend --I've seen a few too many running plays on second-and-long where I was looking for a pass.

#1 is the biggest single reason - something like 70% of our 3rd downs have been for more than 8 yards.

Penalties have hurt in several situations.

I'm thinking the biggest single blame is probably on the o-line.

Regarding KO coverage, that same post noted that as of now, we are #2 in the country in KO coverage!!

Special teams are no longer a liability- except for one punt last week :(

This is just awful, especially after playing ND and Samford - where statistics can be improved - and UVA which is not known for a world-class defense.

The stat is somewhat misleading. Count 2 more third down conversions if Greg Smith's 2 plays in the BC game are overturned. Count a few more against Samford if we werent just sitting on it between the tackles on 3rd and long in the second half.

So the overall season to date number doesn't concern me as much as the 3 for 15 in the UVA game...and only 2 of 14 after that first long bomb to Thomas.

I'm not willing to panic yet about the 3rd and longs but it has been a disconcerting trend in the past 2 weeks.

1147,
you are a patient man. This has been a "trend" ALL season,it is now the NORM! what I want is the single biggest change to improve this(er besides-getting a 1st on 2nd down))

AlaGold, the answer is (or at least to alleviate the 3rd and longs): We need a healthy Tashard Choice. I've said the last 2 weeks that Johnathan Dwyer is a very capable runner, no doubt, and he is going to be great! BUT, Tashard has unbelievable field vision. Several times during the UVA game Dwyer had cutback lanes and instead took it out wide and got stuffed. One thing Tashard is great at, is finding those lanes, cutting back and getting yards when there's nothing there. Thus, we are throwing the ball more on first down, and on average not getting as many yards to begin with. BC and VA aren't all that bad on defense. I think if we can reinvent ourselves a litle this week, move the line of scrimmage and have Deuce back there running, we will be okay.

I don't believe he will be playing this week. It's Dwyer or bust. Yeah, we have Grant but I expect Dwyer to get the nod.

I agree with starting Dwyer. I think he gives us the best chance of establishing a run game until Choice is 100%. We just need the OL to create some holes for him.

#1 Poor 1st and 2nd down run performance.
#2 Receivers gotta hang on to the ball !!! Geez!
#3 36% conversions would have been made if not for penalites. 44% if catchable balls are caught.

#4 Receivers need to learn to run past the 1st down marker and not 2 yards short of it. (5 3rd down conversitions fell short by 1-3 yards on pass plays in the past 2 games.

Dwyer needs to return more kicks..he is almost always good for 15 yards. he sets up nice fld position. but CG will not let this happen.

Find some way to RUN ! ball in when in the red zone..we suck at this.

Most 3rd and longs end with TB throwing into double coverage or overthrowing someone.

That is simply an untrue statement. In fact, in the last two games he has only thrown into 2x coverage 4 times and 2 were receptions (once to Peak and once to Cox) with (no interceptions) 2x covereage is not a risk that you will see TB take very often. The reality on 3rd and long passes in the past 2 games is GT has only had 4 overthrown balls. 2 times TB gets blame 1 Bebe stopped runninng and decided to play jump ball with the DB and 1, an 18 yarder to that Corey did not complete the seam route that would have resulted in a touchdown in Q4 at uva. However he did have 3 other 3rd and long underthrown balls. We've disected the film and charted it every which way to Sunday and your simply barking up the wrong tree.
