I guess I'm in a posting mood today... no sleep make design work tough to concentrate on.. new years parties throw everything off, anyways...

anyone understand what happened when they moved thee ball back when the mutts had 4th and 1 and they move it back to about 2.5/3. Ball is put at 4th and 1, just before whistle blows to start, other ref moves ball back, Mutts call timeout, wondering what the hell just happened. Refs review , ball stays in same place more or less, says Mutts will not be charged a timeout... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wtf.gif pretty much sums up my thoughts and I confused to say the least, thats not the way things are supposed to work with collge ball.

Anyone got an explanation? Perhaps someone else remembers better than I do, but I think thats pretty close to the series of events.

They called a review of the play to see if Pope ever had control of the ball. By moving it back a few yards, I guess they concluded he did not indeed have control. That is what I thought happened, and the commentators also mentioned it as well. Ref just never really explained it.

As a side note, I thought for sure Pope had it, so I dont really understand it...and not sure why they weren't charged the TO. Maybe they called the TO at the same time the refs were getting buzzed from upstairs about the review?

Yeah, the Pac 10 officials were lost with the whole review process it seemed. They took so long in making decisions that it made them look not very confident in their calls. Having said that, I think they got most of them right, but it did look like Pope made the reception.

I thought he had it too, looked like the spot was exactly where it should have been before they moved it back. This instant replay makes refs look great or like bumbling fools, and when they don't explain it it makes it that much worse. Spend 5 minutes looking at the screen, might as well spend 20 seconds explaining what you saw.

UGAG SCREWED THEMSELVES.

The ref realigned the ball to the foot of the sideline official. Richt, after deciding to go for it on 4th down, got POed about the ball movement and called TO so there would be time for a review. BUT, the review showed Pope the genius had not actually caught the ball and the ball was respotted at the previous point. I think UGAG would have made the first, but they outsmarted themselves, in grand Popelike fashion.

Actually, when they moved it back the first time (right before the 4th and 1), I believe the linesman was marking the ball where his bean bag was dropped (spot of the fumble) since a ball fumbled forward out of bounds returns to the spot of last possession. If you remember, Bilbo did the same thing against ugag and the refs spotted it where he fumbled and explained the situation. I do agree though that unless they had another view showing him bobbling the ball, it appeared that he caught it. Of course the way the network kept losing the picture, they may have shown it when I couldn't see it.

They ruled it an incomplete pass. It was the 5 foot 11 200 lb safety that lit 6 foot 8 future NFL All Pro TE Pope up and caused the fumble. Pope has some talent but I just do not see what everyone else sees in this guy. At least he has his degree to fall back on when he gets exposed in the NFL.

Lets see. 6'8", quick with good hands and can also block well. You are right, I just don't see it either. I am sure glad he decided not to come to Tech. What would we do with a 6.5 WR AND a 6.8 TE. I will give you the fact that he has to prove his "ALL PRO" status, but one is crazy to think he doesn't have it in him.

Have you watched him? There are plenty of 6'8" players out there with good hands and quickness that do not even make it on a High School playing field.

He is an easy target for QB's and knows how to get open. Seems simple enough. All you have to have is success and teams will want him. Not saying I like the idiot, just that he has the build and potential to be great. And probably will. That is because he is GOOD. Name 5 TE's better than him in CFB.

He will get drafted by his size and potential alone. I would take the kid from UCLA any day of the week over Pope. The NFL will be a different game for him as he will need to finally play up to his potential versus just getting drafted because of it.

They ruled it an incomplete pass after they moved it back the first time and after the review.
