Just a little info for discussion purposes… I did a little comparison on Godsey and Suggs thru their first 6 games…. I have to admit, this is my attempt to find something positive in light of Saturdays loss. These numbers are based on the 2000 season.

Godsey:
Team Record 4-2
Total Yards Passing – 1408
Attempts- 194
Comp- 116
Int- 3
Comp % 60%
Yards/Completion 12
Touchdowns 14

Suggs:
Team Record 4-2
Total Yards Passing – 930
Attempts- 135
Comp- 77
Int- 6
Comp % 57%
Yards/Completion 12
Touchdowns 7

Suggs has thrown 69% of the number of passes thrown by Godsey at this point

Suggs interception ratio is 1:22 attempts while Godseys was 1:65

Also, Godsey TD ratio per attempt is 1:13 while Sugg’s is 1:19

When I look at the numbers and scale Suggs attempts to Godseys, I don’t see a big decline in production, the only area that really sticks out is the interception ratio and the touchdown ratio … if the coaches can get the decision making corrected, we may not be in as bad a shape as we think.

Just throwing something out here for everyone during our off week…

Good point. The INTs are killing him (and us).

AJ hasn't shown the accuracy GG had, nor the good judgement on when to throw into a crowd. People have said he doesn't look off his receivers and doesn't look through all the receivers. BOB is not big on the option play, I'm told. And, CG has said we don't have a check-off system (have seen a few audibles, but not many), so he's pretty much stuck with the play BOB gives him (short of calling a TO).

I'd like to see the coaches just tell him to throw it away, eat it, or run to the sideline rather than throw where there are more defenders than receivers.

While he needs lots of work in many areas, he might come around and do a decent QB job for us yet.

The talk about a check off system confuses me. I haven't seen/heard any of Chan's comments regarding the topic but did see a TV interview with AJ before one of our games where he said he had the option of changing the play on every play. What am I missing?

I think Gailey said that during one of the call-in shows... I cant really remember, but I do remember hearing that... but its hard for me to believe that AJ doesnt have the ability to change a play at the line... in today's game, I dont see how that philosophy could be effective...

i agree the numbers look ok but the biggest difference i see is that in crunchtime he does not come thru...but heres to hopeing he takes the next step against maryland

Suggs isn't half the QB Godsey was.

There's a reason why he wasn't startin at UT folks

techjacket, care to enlighten us? No offense but your's is the kind of post I hate. No information, no rational discussion, just a slam on one of our players. I may happen to agree with you, but at least try to make an argument of some kind.

Sure thing ncj
first of all when the above post was made this morning I had my 4 & 1 yr olds here in my office with me so hopefully you will understand why it wasn't "rational". But here are some stats for ya. Forget Vandy and Uconn. Let's take a look at the last 4 games shall we?

1. combined record 11-10

2. Suggs completion rate 53%

3. 6 INTs

4. int/completion ratio 1/9 That's 1 int for
every 9 completions

Please take a look at the combined records of the last 4 teams we've faced. They ain't real good folks.

He makes poor decisions. His mechanics are horrible. And yes, in my opinion I believe he had a lot to do with 2 of those losses. Is he half the QB Godsey was? Hell no! Was Godsey half the QB Hamilton was? HELLLLLLL NOOOOOOO!!!!

I have made this statement before and I'll make it again. When Tech takes the field every Sat. I'll support whoever CG has out there. I might not agree with him but I will support his decision. I don't think Suggs is a very good QB at all but I will cheer him every time he's out there!!

They're both fairly slow and I have no more faith in AJ than I did in George originally. Godsey's emergence as a QB was one of the most pleasant surprises in TECH sports history. Of course, I'm still optimistic about AJ. The main diiference I see so far is AJ's not being able to look off his receivers and get rid of the ball quickly. Surely the staff is working on this in practice.

I agree gn. I never thought he would have had the year like he did in 2000!!

Techjacket, I hate to get involved with the student athlete, because it is possible there are other circumstances.

Is it possible, Godsey and Tech would have been even better last year had Godsey been under the continued tutorship of Friegden? Is it possible, the plays would have been more tailored to Godsey's abilities last year if Friegden was still there?

Is it possible, Suggs would be eating the ACC alive this year if he were under the tutorship of Friegden? I hate to keep bringing Friegden into the formula, but the coaches have a lot to do with a kid's performances.

I could compare Suggs with Godsey better, if both had been coached under Friegden or the same established offensive coordinator. Since both have been tutored under two different coaches, it seems a little unfair to judge the two.

Sorry, I think Godsey's problems seemed to be with that knee of his. He doesn't go down in the Peach Bowl and I think last year would have been totally different for him. I thought OB did a pretty good job with the O last year. And no, I don't think Suggs would be much better with the Fridge. Just my O.

I dunno. It just seems to me that our problems started in the Peach Bowl. Our offense started to stumble there, and we never got our stride back the following year.

Godsey is a winner. He showed his metal when he recovered the blocked FG in the Ugag game that led us to a win at the end of the game. He had what I call winning savvy. But a lot of that confidence in his QB ability was attached somehow to Friedgen. When Friedgen left, a goodly bit of Godsey's confidence left too.

His knee hurt his capabilities for being mobile, but his mental part of the game seem to never come back up to what he had with Friedgen.

IMHO our stumbling began with Friedgen's departure. If he were still here, we would be undefeated. Our defense is playing quite well and good enough for us to be undefeated.

As I recall, Godsey indicated last year that there was no love lost between himself and Friedgen. He wasn't unhappy to see the coach leave. Of course that doesn't mean that Friedgen didn't get more out of him than BO'B could, but I SERIOUSLY doubt that Godsey reads it that way. Godsey was a not very speedy guy with a hurt knee last year; I think that's pretty much the bottom line.

I also think we have fooled ourselves in our opinion that O'Leary left the cupboard so full for Gailey. We did lose 5 games last year, and we got basically the same team back, except without Godsey. If we lose fewer than 5 this year, Gailey did great, IMO.

We're going to have to wait and see how well he recruits and develops recruits. And I don't mean until February, I mean until 2005 or so.

bellyseries Im afraid you are so right about the big O leaving the cubbard full NOT) I agree with you the evidence says otherwise.

techjacket...good post. As I said earlier I don't have a problem with people's opinions, I just hate the "he sucks" types of posts. Yours sounded like that.
