I recall another Tech team that was reeling from a couple of unexpected losses and was facing a very good Clemson team coming to BDSHGF. As GT was preparing to take the field behind the wreck, unexpectedly and suddenly the rats ran down to the field lining up all the way across the field to the GT sideline, cheering the team as they took the field.

The upperclassmen chanted “Damn good rats!” and the fired up team beat Clemson in a hard fought battle. The team gave the game ball to the student body and it stayed in the trophy case in the student center for decades, may still be there, I don’t know.

This began the tradition of rats on the field. Sadly, the tradition was ended a few years ago. Do we even have rats anymore? Regardless, it would be nice if somehow the students would demonstrate support for the team to help their confidence.

Wouldn’t hurt for alumni and fans to show some support as well.

I will be there, but it sure is hard to be a GT fan. Has been for the past 52 years of my life.

That said, I went to Athens Saturday. What a cluster öööö. Getting in and out of Athens is just such a pain in the ass. BTW, they are very big, very athletic, I see no weaknesses at all in that team. Fml.

The sad thing too is the student section - every year it's more and more empty on both end-zones. I'm not sure if that's a combination of the team not doing well and classwork or just in general.

Their receivers on our DB's with no pass rush. What could go wrong?

ripped a hole in the knee of a good pair of slacks climbing the fence around Grant Field at that game (1971). for a long time there was a "game ball" with the score of that game on it displayed in the student center..

Oh, there are still some rats alright. They are all hiding out and scampering around the Hill.

I think that was my frosh year. Was that the game the rats got the Tiger's tail? That was when we were stilling playing Clemson at Grant Field each year.

I think the tail was the Auburn tiger’s tail, not Clemson.

was Clemson any good back then? In the mid seventies they weren't

If i'm not in Atlanta on gameday, I just sit in my house for 3 hours before kickoff and 5 hours afterwards, because there isn't going to be any breathing room. Otherwise I don't have a problem getting around town, but good god the students can't drive even a little bit over here.

This. 1979, I think.

We sent it back to them in a box with a yellow jacket attached to the tail.
I was gone by '76 and I witnessed this event on the field. Maybe we did it to Clemson and Auburn.

Clemson played us tough I think in '73 and we lost to them in the Valley the next year. First time we had played over for a long time. I could be off a year.

1974 was the first year Tech ever played at Clemson.
