Taking the game out of the players' hands

Sure, we had three turnovers and played sloppy, but I hate when officials take the game out of the players hands. This call to me was worse that Wheeler's against ND. And Michael Johnson's facemask was not egregious. I thought the goal this year was to eliminate the incidental grabs and really focus on the neck twisting, dangerous ones.

We still had our opportunities, and did give them a gift 7 late in the first half, but it's just really unfair to make calls to take the game out of the players' hands and ask them to continue to stop a good team like Virginia Tech.

The rule change eliminated penalizing brushing the facemask, not using it to help make a tackle like MJ did. The worst part about that play is that he was going out of bounds near midfield...fifteen yards from the spot turned into a net of about 30 for them.

The helmet to helmet rule is just dumb to begin with. It should only apply to the qb when he is in the pocket, in my opinion.

Except that he didn't grab his face mask he grabbed his pads just below it.

I don't really know what to say to that...I watched the replay on my DVR three times because initially we thought they called late hit out of bounds and we didn't think that could possibly be right. He definitely grabbed the facemask.

gth is right. Have looked at it several times on dvr. head turns, and facemask is being grabbed--that makes it a 15 yard penalty.

All that matters is Tech played more than well enough to win today. Sometimes we're going to play that well and not win, and that sucks.

Fumbles are going to average out to about 50/50 over time, as far as who picks up how many. Obviously a team that's trying harder is going to be more likely to get a little better, which would seem to benefit GT even more with this staff. Today we dropped 2, and lost them both. That sucks, but it's the variance that will happen if we keep dropping them.

We're going to get better, we're going to be very good, don't kill the players for this.

i did too man, i believe it was pad, you can see MJ's hand pull his jersey back and you see his white undershirt. either way though, it looked bad, they have to call something.

MJ grabbed the face mask. It was incidental, though, IMO. Obviously, not in the ref's. This year, there are supposed to be no penalties for incidental face mask.

Now, the call that wasted the game. I watched this game up to 8 minutes left, only to have the refs intervene and change the complexion of the game all by themselves.

What do you tell Cooper Taylor? There is no corrective action to be taken. You just throw your hands up in the air and say, "&*((**&(#@^!&$, it's football!". This is why that call pisses me off. You can't correct his action. The penalty did nothing positive for the integrity of the game.

It hurt because we had momentum, just held them to three and out, and would have been able to wear their defense down with another demoralizing possession.

Now, the refs didn't win the game for them. VPI played a good game, and it was a great game for all of us to watch. It would have helped if Roddy Jones laid out for that pass and caught it. I am not being critical of him, but that was a big missed op.

Maybe the loss will put a chip on our shoulders.

Go Jackets!

If fumbles average out, GT will win at least 75% of its games with Johnson as coach. unfortunately, that might be a few years away.

Great game, stayed close with a lot of key players banged up. One less fumble or hitting a wide-open r. jones late in the 4th and we win. If we win next week, it's still a great start to the era.

The facemask was grabbed, for a split second the RB's head was jerked back --not long-- but long enough by interpretation of the rule.

The hit out of bounds was helmet-to-helmet. The interpretation of this rule leaves a lot to be desired. I don't think it should have been called in that situation, but it was helmet-to-helmet.

There were just too many fumbles lost (with the miscue near the end of the half obviously having a big impact on the outcome of this game), as well as a couple of VT fumbles not recovered and capitalized upon.

I hate to lose a game that was there for the taking, particularly on the road against a Coastal division foe. This one is leaving a bitter taste for sure --but it's over. Time to move on, correct the errors of the previous week, get better the next week, and win.

Our guys need to regroup and get ready to kick some asses next Saturday and put this one behind them.

If we can win out in the ACC we have an excellent shot at winning the division. VPI will have to lose 2 ACC games of course, but it's very possible as you figure they won't get as many breaks as they did today in the future, because they did not deserve to win this game. We beat them in most major statistics.

That said, it's time to officially get rid of this god damn helmet to helmet rule; it led to the ND loss in '06 and it definitely aided in our loss today. This is football! Helmets hitting other helmets happens!

I agree with you, and I think the helmet-to-helmet rule is the dumbest rule in college football. If the guy is spearing, then through him out of the game; but this your helmet touched his helmet rule is dumb. Why not coat each helmet with 1" of foam so it doesn't matter?

Pretty much every time it's called, the announcers of the game say "Well, that's a penalty by the rules, but I don't know what you tell the kid to change. That just looked like a good football tackle." The problem is that the NCAA would probably get flayed by safety groups or whatever if they did away with it.

Think about how many times helmets clash in the interior line --it's obvious by the marks that appear on the helmets of offensive and defensive linemen over the course of a game --or the course of a season for those programs who don't clean up their helmets from week to week.

You're exactly right. The rule is in place to eliminate spearing, avoid concussions and serious injuries, both to the runner and the tackler. No one should lead with their head, you could mess yourself up for life hitting someone that way --as, unfortunately, some have done over the years.

You're probably right, but this rule needs to be amended in some fashion, because it gives the referees too much power, which can alter the course of the game. Helmets hit each other a lot over the course of a game, where's the line drawn?

Incidental??? He turned his head around. That would've been 15 under the old rules. MJs facemask was not a missed call.

Personally, I'd like to see it only apply to the QB when he is behind the line of scrimmage. In my mind, that is the time when he is "defenseless," in a way, and concentrating on receivers downfield rather than his own safety, and isn't really running into anyone with any force. Once he gets past that line of scrimmage, he is just like any other ballcarrier, and in fact initiates the contact many times(a la Brady Quinn).

That is a rules change I would like to see, of course if it makes sense, the NCAA is probably not interested, all you have to look at is the idiocy of the BCS and allowing it to continue.

The facemask call was 100% legit, and would have been a 15 yarder last year or any other year.
