Talent vs. Coaching

I find it strange how some fonts on here predicted GT would be so terrible this year because of our "lack of talent", now are doing a complete reversal by saying we have had the talent and our problem is "lack of coaching or personnel management".

Which is it guys? No offense but you cannot have the depleted roster we have had and have depth. If we play more guys then we are going with highly inexperienced players that could cost us a game in situations.

To even hint that we are as good as FSU and we have the talent is absurd. To say the coaching lost us the FSU game is absolutely ridiculous. The coaching was the biggest thing that KEPT US IN the FSU game at all. It was a heartbreaker, no doubt, and there were some obvious calls I wish we could have back. But that's part of football. I guarantee you there are FSU fans who bet Bowden could have some calls back to. Hindsight is 20/20, and we all get to judge based on hindsight which is very convenient for us.

But overall if you cannot give credit to the coaching staff for the job they did out there, then quite frankly, you're a Damn Idiot.

I see posts on here by many of the same old fonts that refuse to recognize the coaching that has taken place out on the field. That is disturbing. It's healthy to be critical, but if you cannot temper your criticism with the praise these coaches deserve, then it's obvious you have some kind of agenda or you have issues that go way beyond your dislike of said Coach.

We have a walk-on starting at RB and a true frosh at QB, which explains a lot as to why our offensive #'s rank at the bottom of the NCAA, yet are still able to be highly competitive. We should be 2-1, no doubt. The players know this, the coaches know this, but it's part of football. To dump blame on the coaches for an excellent game plan and the effort they have shown the last two games is complete crap and as a Tech fan (if that is what some of you are)you should be ashamed of yourselves.

BOR,

Your analysis is very sound. Somebody must doing some coaching or we(GT) would not have given the performances we have in the last 2 games. No one on this board can affect the outcome of games either physically or mentally but our SPIRIT does go far in my opinion in giving the Jackets desire. Yes, naysayers, the glasses are GOLD and I am darn proud of this.

Experts are like opinions everybody has one. Could use body references but Belly or Beeware might censor.

I fully concur with BOR's post.

Everyone thought we'd tank because of the numbers lost - not TALENT! Having to play early, filling holes - by the way, holes filled by O'Leary recruits ... and it seems to be working as far as competing. The most directed issue was QB and that seems to be ok.

I never sold short what I THOUGHT we could do based on what Chan came into. O'Leary did leave the cupboard full ... enough for him to have kids who can get the job done in times of GREAT ADVERSITY! My GRIPE has always been - we have talent ... why do we lose games like Sat., and last year - Clemson, Wake, FSU, Fresno when INDEED we had enough good talent to make those L's - W's!

My complaint from day one since Chan Gailey coached his first game that he lost was - WHY????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? The only game we were outmanned (talent wise) was UGAG last season!

Now, take a look at coaching...

You hit the nail on the head.
As undermanned as we are it is remarkable that we are even competitive.

After Flunk-gate, we are basically on self-imposed probation, and t is rare that a team on probation performs at a high level. Does anyone know exactly how far under the scholarship limit we are?

I'm impressed with what I've seen so far and we should only continue to get better. After all that's gone on so far, Saturday is still the biggest game of the year so far. We've got to get a W to get some more positive momentum.

If we can go into October 3-2, I can't imagine ANYONE who will be disappointed.

I think we should instill a "24 hour" rule here similar to what the team has.

Let's talk Clemson!!

no kidding, i havnt stayed on this board more than 2 minutes since this weekend.

its too depressing.

Good grief, that question could be asked of any of O'Leary's teams. For example, how did we lose to an inferior Wake Forest team in 1999(?), an LSU team in the Peach Bowl, a Maryland team in Friedgen's first year, UGAG in O'Leary's last season, etc......

This constant harping on coaching is ridiculous.

This really would be a good thread if people could get past name calling. Last year's team had enough talent to win 9 games, maybe more. They won seven. I think the reason was our head coach was not yet ready to run a college program. He put himself behind the learning curve by screwing around in Miami, got himself stuck with some coaches he was not compatible with and we saw the results on the field. Now, would GOL have won more games? Maybe, but history showed with O'Leary that he usually lost at least a game a year he should have won. Would UGA have waxed O'Leary the way they did Chan? Probably not. O'Leary understood the importance of that game, something I am sure Chan is familar with now. Chan's problems stemmed from the finish to last year and the aloof way he dealt with the alumni after those games.

Now this year, Chan has assumed control of the program, he got his coaches and he now has the team playing to its utmost talentwise. Saturday night was evidence for that. He deserves credit for adapting. Give it to him. This season starts Saturday.

MsTech, this is not a flame but, if I may, can I ask a question of you? You posted weeks ago that you were the daughter of a coach or married to a coach or used to coach? (I apologize but I do not remember specifics). I'm curious...if that coach wasn't you (ie..I think you said it was your father) and is still alive, what does that person feel about the job CG has done in the first 3 games of this year? Just curious.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">It DOES NOT TAKE A ROCKET SCIENTIST to figure out what an OUTSTANDING job this coaching staff has done..As most of you have seen..Im a big Chan Gailey fan..more importantly im a BIG GT fan...I just think that Chan Gailey is the best coach for GT at this time...I believe with the obvious lack of talent and depth..That we have to have an NFL type coach to succeed..I believe if we give This Coach the usual 4 to 5 years that we could POSSIBLY see another Bobby Ross type era here at GT...IMHO !!!!!

Wrecked...good post. The facts are we have lost games we should have won every year since I've been a Tech fan (about 1975). They were all the HC responsibility, if not necessarily his fault. It was true under Pepper, Curry, Ross, Lewis, O'Leary and Chan. In fact, there are very few teams ever who win every game they are capable of winning. Chan was behind the curve last year. That's not his fault, if it's anyone's it's the people who hired him. But he appears to have gotten things straight this year and our performance so far shows that.

Anyone who isn't excited about what they've seen so far and who isn't more hopeful and fired up than they were 3 weeks ago either doesn't have a pulse, doesn't understand sports, hates Chan or isn't really interested in Tech doing well. I'll let them decide for themselves which it is.

God Love you BOR. I'm right there with you.

I used to have an administrative assistant that used to say, "Pride will kill you."

Well it will cost you some happiness. I have a strong suspicion that a couple of people on this board are more worried about being right - protecting their ego, than being a fan right now.

Even the people arguing with you know you're right. They are just tired of being proved wrong. Just let them be unhappy all by themselves.

Talent and depth go hand in hand. Sure we have talented players, but even they will wear out as the game progresses, especially when they stay on the field as much as they did in the second half on Saturday.

Why did they stay on the field? Because they're is a big drop-off in talent once you get past those 15 guys who play.

FSU has more talent because they are 3 deep at every position with people who can actually get on the field and contribute.

As for last year, I think our lack of leadership and (arguably) talent at the QB position probably cost us the Clemson, Wake, and FSU games.

No real explanation for the last 2 games other than we flat out sucked. However, we have obviously learned something from that because this year's team WILL NOT QUIT.

Do you really think O'Leary left the cupboard full? Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't we only win 7 games his last season, with those same players, INCLUDING a stud QB? I'd hardly call the cupboard full when you consider the dropoff in QB play.

Anyway, you are correct, the namecalling is stupid. I just find it hard to believe that you can't say anything positive about the job our team has done this year...

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Say what? Can you speak in English please?

You are the one that keeps O'Leary issues invovled in most of your discussions.

For example... you stated that we were out manned against UGA last year. O'leary is the one to blame for that, not Chan.

td_gtgsu made a very good point about your argument, but you chose to ignore it. Why get upset with others who won't answer your question when you do the same thing? Pot meet kettle.

Umm, I was merely responding to the fact you brought up O'Leary's recruits in your original post.

There is a lot of criticism of Gailey for losing games to teams with "inferior talent", and bringing up O'Leary's recruits. My point was the same question about losing to teams with "inferior talent" applies to a number of O'Leary's games as well.

The bottom line is it seems very immature when we denigrate the other team (inferior talent) in an attempt to take a swipe at Gailey.
