Make no mistake, the biggest play of the game, BY FAR, was Carpenter's hit on the FSU wide receiver (terry) coming across the middle w/19 seconds left in the 2nd Quarter. (I'm sure some zebra wanted to concoct a way to throw a flag on this completely textbook legal hit, but couldn't find a way to do it). his hit did a number of things:
first) they were attempting to drive to a 13-0 or 17-0 halftime lead, which would have been very difficult to overcome. B) it shut down their drive. III) It raised every FSU receivers eye brows a bunch and IV) It COMPLETELY changed the tone of the game. FSU receivers had some swiveled heads going across the middle in the second half, if you pay attention to the tapes. Plus it changed BIG MO heading into the locker room...and coming back out!
Truth is, DL and LBs played a helluva game. But we will succeed this year on the basis of a secondary that can flat out hit and cover. They have to continue to lead by that example. Teams almost always take on the personality of the head coach and ours is to win by defense. 16-13 is a defensive score, no doubt. Love what Sims and the O did yesterday to keep us alive, but we will live and die in the next ten by virtue of a strong secondary, and D. I look forward to watching that growth!
did i mention that i hate watching offensive special teams, but do love our punt and KO coverage teams! And i will have a harvin shrine by the time he graduates....pure stud! but know that i turned my head (but didn't cough) on the last field goal, which is why it was good, no doubt. I'll continue not to watch PATs or FGs...bad for my digestion, liver and alcohol bill.
In hindsight, don't know the halftime stats but i wudn't be surprised if free shoes only had about 100yds of offense in 2H. agree, they were sitting on a lead, but still looked like we had more energy than them in 2H and the 2Q hit was a big part of that. Don't get carried away, free shoes is probably a 6-6 team, BEST case, but it's still a GREAT WIN on da road!
i know carp hurts like hell today, but he should feel better knowing he has my game ball sitting on his desk!
mooch, out.
