Since we're all in a ranting mood...

I hate the 'team goals' thing. Every year the goals are pretty similar — win all the games, win the national championship, win the ACC, beat UGA, win a major bowl, etc.

Then we get a few losses and the team's crossed off many of the goals and are left wondering if any are still reachable — and we're barely half-way through the season.

It is probably hokey and dumb, but in my fictional job as a legendary head coach, there's only one team goal, every team, every season, every game: "WIN THIS PLAY"

That's posted in the tunnel to the field, that's shouted at the end of every meeting, that's tattoo'd on the face of every freshman. Heck, I'd figure out some way to put in the alma mater.

Yeah I agree the goals thing is kind of dumb. Might make more sense to have fewer win related goals -- e.g. get 200 plus yards rushing every game, average two sacks a game, etc.

Pretty sure this is similar to setting long, mid, and short term goals. Don't y'all have similar in life/career? Then sometimes you get to a point you have to adjust.

I used to say "It isn't whether you win or lose, it is how you keep score"

I agree. We need to make sure our team is totally aimless every season.

There are always greater goals to achieve than winning one game, whether you make them explicit or not. Multi-game goals allow for more competition, glory, fun.

I think the problem, if there is one, is not savoring individual wins and always looking toward longer goals. I think the bowl system is good for rewarding individual wins though, because each win gets you a better bowl game.

We should definitely give them all trophies before the first game.
