Good post Ah! I was just looking at the bios on the spring prospectus on ramblingwreck.com yesterday. I think we've got some EXCELLENT assistants with pretty darn good track records. I beelieve Nix's ties to Auburn and the state of Georgia will serve him very well as recruiting coordinator. It seems we're going to concentrate our recruiting focus in some different areas and Alabama and Georgia are two of those key areas. Texas being another. Nix has a great background as a coach AND a player and the fact that he's not THAT far removed from his days at Auburn suggest he'll be very accessible and very relatable to potential recruits. Everything I've heard about him is solid! <img border="0" alt="[BigThumbUp]" title="" src="graemlins/bigthumbup.gif" />

Patrick's dad coaches at Northside, consistently one of the better football (big school) programs in the state. His dad is well respected amongst high school coaches within the state. The recruiting ties we will now have will be improved greatly since they waned a bit in O'leary's later years in his tenure here (w/respect to HS coaches in GA)

Nix was a good hire and in line w/the trend to have "younger" recruiting coordinators that can "connect" w/today's players better.

As a side note, Butch Brooks has decided to stay on for a few more years, to help David Wilson become more familiar w/the coaches in the state. Brooks coached at Washington Wilkes where he had a successful coaching career--not to mention that (Big) Ed Wilder went there.

I'd like to think Nix will be good, but he stands no chance. After all, he didn't hire Fridge while he was at Henderson State, and he hasn't ever coached a single Division I game, so he can't be any good. He'll probably turn out to be another B*** L****.

Dadgum Braine - what did he let Gailey hire this guy for?

GO JACKETS!!

Can't wait for the season to start so CG and staff can show one and all they can coach in Div 1.

Since things are slow, I thought if might be interesting to look at the bios on the coaches one at a time. We could comment on each one as to how we think he will help or hurt the team.

Patrick Nix

Position:Running Backs/Recruiting Coordinator
Experience:1st year
Alma Mater:Auburn, 1995

Patrick Nix joins the Georgia Tech program for the year 2002 as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator, after one year as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Samford University.

Prior to his season at Samford, Nix was the head coach at Henderson State University, an NCAA Division II school in Arkadelphia, Ark., for two years (1999-2000).

Under Nix, the HSU offense set 18 school records, four Gulf South Conference records and three national records.

Nix began his coaching career with a three-year stint at Jacksonville State University, serving as running backs coach in 1996 and as quarterbacks coach and passing game coordinator in 1998. He helped the Gamecocks improve from 1-10 in 1997 to 7-4 in 1998.

A native of Attalla, Ala., Nix was a standout quarterback at Auburn University, where, as a sophomore, he was part of the Tigers’ 1993 squad posting a perfect 11-0 record.

In 1995, as captain and starting quarterback, he led Auburn to an 8-4 record and received the team’s Pat Sullivan Award for Offensive Player of the Year. He was awarded the Cliff Hare Award as the school’s Student-Athlete of the Year.

He finished his playing days as the Tigers’ career passing efficiency leader, and ranked among the top five in school history in numerous other statistical categories.

Nix earned a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Auburn in 1995, and is married to the former Krista Chapman. They have a daughter, Emma, 4, and a son, Bo, 2.

My assessment follows:

His coaching at Henderson State seems impressive to me, and he seems to have done well at all stops. I have stated in earlier posts, I think he is the eventual heir as the Offensive Coordinator.

Since his Dad was a high school coach in the Atlanta area, he might be able to help us with recruiting within the State. I was surprised he was not the assigned as the QB coach also.

It seems he is out of place as a running back coach, however, he has served in that area at JSU.

Thoughts?

Isn't his father a coach outside of Atlanta? Like down in Warner Robins or Macon or something? I do agree that he's a good hire. Looking forward to seeing what he can do.

One thing I noticed about a lot of the successful first year staffs last year is most of them had former head coaches in lesser positions. Both of Fridge's Coordinators were former HCs.

I think it really helps to have guys that have experience with the 'global' perspective of the team as well as their individual positions.

The next OC has already been hired and is present at GT now. This should make BeeWare and others happy, who have always wanted coaches promoted from within.

Good point ASho, but I am not one of "them".
Here's hoping we get an already proven (in spite of your record re: nix that is to be admired)
OC that will turn some heads at the announcement of his hiring*(in a positive direction by the way!!)
If it is Nix, then I am 100% with the decision.
I personally hope it is someone else.
P.S.............So Good to see you back!!!!!

Pat Nix's father is Conrad Nix who is the head coach at Northside High School in Warner Robin, Ga. The elder Nix commented after Tech hired his son that he had always been loyal to Auburn but he would have to put in a good word for the Jackets because they gave his son a big chance.
It is obvious that the elder Nix appreciates Tech for hiring his son.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Bold statement, and i like that. YOu get full credit if it comes true, and you get called out if it doesn't.

For the record, by the nature of this thread you are implying Nix is the next OC.

If my hunch is right, that is what he was hired for in case O'Brien jumped ship.

<font size="2" face="Arial, Verdana, Sans-Serif">Quite interesting! I will be honest in that I don't know much about Nix other than his palying days at Auburn. I can't say if he would be good or bad, so I will defer to those who know more than me on this subject.

The only thing I woule be concerned about is his experience, and who he has actually "learned" from in the coaching ranks.

If you compare O'Brien's playing days, he was a defensive player and not an offensive one. On the other hand, Nix was an offensive player and won some accolades as an offensive quarterback.

Nix has done quite well as OC and head coach. Since his father was a head coach, I feel relatively sure, he picked up a lot of coaching techniques from his Dad.

If you match Nix against O'Brien, it appears Nix has a much better understanding of the offense and the way a quarterback has to perform during a game. It seems reasonable that a person who has performed well at quarterback would be able to coach quarterbacks better than a coach who has not played the position.

Just because O'Brien was a nice person, book smart, and studied under Friegden, that does not mean he has the analytical brain of Ralph.

Personally, I believe Nix will make a great OC, and, someday, a good Head Coach somewhere. The possible problem I see with Nix being the OC, is he will do very well and become head coach material for some other school to pluck from Tech.

Of course, this is looking at the situation through my eyes, and it is obvious, we all have our own opinions.
